Anyhow the second word is to help improve optical character recognition and/or digitise printed works. This is the sort of thing OCR has trouble with so such things often appear.

It is a latex command (although I am not cool enough to know latex or tex that well so I snatched that from the source window of lyx).
Such programs/methods are annoying to use if you are used to the MS and co way of doing things but there is little better (and what there is certainly is not free) for sticking equations into documents and making your documents look like they might as well have been torn from a book.
