My SD card is formated in exFAT, 128k. Can I keep it in exFAT but put it in 32k clusters?
Does it work too?

3DS SD cards HAVE to be FAT32 to not cause issues with homebrews and other things. Why even go with exFAT? And yes, 32k clusters fix any compatibility issues with homebrews such as AGB_Firm CIAs or older nds-bootstrap versions.

Won't FAT32 usage cause problems with big (>4GB) ROMs?

There are NO games above the size a FAT32 can store, all CIAs are 2.9GB or so TOPS. Don't confuse the compressed CIAs with the uncompressed 3DS files. Use FAT32, exFAT will only cause issues.

I mean, one of these issues is the 3DS just flat-out not reading the card, so it's not like you have a choice in FAT32 or exFAT...
Actually.... I was using exFAT just fine. Never had a problem with it.
Formating in FAT32 didn't fix the screen wrap problem for me, so I decided to just play the ROM on my PS Vita.

...what? The 3DS definitely doesn't support exFAT... even looking on the internet I'm just seeing people saying that exFAT does not work. I've even tried an exFAT formatted card before, and it didn't work.

Anyways, what you might want to try is pressing the home button & then hitting cancel a few times, this is a known AGB_FIRM issue & there is no way to properly fix it.

I learned about that trick, but I'm just too lazy to do it while I can play in other devices.

If the sd card is 128gb format the SD card to fat32 using gui format or something similar and with 64kb clusters as opposed to 32kb and this screen wrapping issue will dissappear, I read this on reddit and tried it and it's been fine ever since for me. If you can't be bothered to do that you could spam the home button until the screen lines up properly again but that's just a pain really.

64k?
I've read that it's supposed to be 32k.
What is the right one?

Are you using 128gb? If so ignore everything you have read and try what I said and you won't be disappointed, I have never had any issues with any gba cias since, injected or not and no problems with any other homebrew. Before I had my 128gb formatted in 32kb and kept having the issue but it's been completely resolved by using 64kb clusters

Oh shit, you're one of the rare few who had the GBA VC graphical bug using a 128 GB card formatted in FAT32 + 32 KB cluster size.
Unfortunately, that advice isn't steadfast. Some people with 128 GB cards reported having this bug with theirs formatted FAT32 + 64 KB cluster size.

Well that sucks it doesn't work for all cards but certainly worth trying if your using a 128gb sd card, it worked really well for me and quite a few other people, if it helps my sd card was just some cheap Toshiba or Samsung sd with a half decent r/w speed.

Oh no doubt, this coming from a fellow PNY 128 GB micro SD user with FAT32 + 64 KB cluster size.

General rule of thumb for SD cards
  • 64 GB and under - use 32 KB cluster size
  • 128 GB - first try 32 KB. If it's too slow or has GBA VC bug, increase to 64 KB.
    • Or start with 64 KB and then drop to 32 KB if any problems arise.
  • 200 GB and over - use 64 KB cluster size (32 KB will be awfully slow and laggy)
    • I don't think the bug appears with 32 KB at these sizes.

@Vovonator, here are several related threads about this.
