RPCS3 is slowly doing what Sony isn't, they announced the ability to play physical games directly to the RPSC3 emulator which allows you to play physical games you currently own. While current Blu-ray drives are limited more will surely be updated.
Uh, no. If your PC's Bluray can read the contents of the disc, the drive is compatible. If it can't, it can't. It's a hardware limitation and not some magic firmware trick with RPSC3.
As someone who has never owned a Sony console,

own ISO's of all my PS3 games
(which is every PS3 game I ever had even a slight interest in playing) and have no physical media, so like 100% of current RPSC3 owners, this announcement changes nothing. I mean you can literally download every single PS3 game + updates and DLC right now, today. Why even bother with a scratched up disc?
But I do love that using RPSC3 on Linux on a PS5 allows you to run physical PS3 discs (well, the games that run on RPSC3). This does make the lack of PS3 backwards compatibility from Sony even more inexcusable and harder to ignore.
This isn't front page news, however, since it does not change the number of PS3 games that can be run on any platform and you could already dump PS3 games with one of the drives listed above on a PC; it's not a game changer.
