I am trying to make XVID files with hard subs (that don't require extra sub files) from a DVD but I aren't having much luck.
All the guides I have have .sub, etc files or are in a container file like MKV.

These files are meant for my Archos 605, can anyone help me?

Have you tried fairuse? The dvd will have to be in ISO format or unprotected for you to do it. It does have an option that will hardcode the subs. Its easy to use as well.

If you know how to extract it into an xvid and a subtitle file, here's a oneliner to encode it back

mencoder -sub -ovc lavc -oac copy -o
You can substitute lavc for xvid, but you need to specify an -xvidopts parameter for it to work.
Mencoder is part of MPlayer.
