You need a modchip if you got a patched unit that is above 4.1.0

What @Hayato213 said. There's just no way around it right now. But I have a feeling the Switch's end of life might bring some unreleased exploit, the same way it was seen for the Wii U. So if you're patient, who knows what might happen? Don't quote me on this, though.

you need to follow one of the many guides on the net, here on GBATemp there are several (use the search function), personally I do prefer https://nh-server.github.io/switch-guide/ avoid the youtube ones, normally are outdated and you get confused or with a damaged switch

Yes the guides have section on how to install the hardware mods needed on patches units, here on GBATem even are tutorials about the firmware update of them and the use of adapters to install on OLED models.

Unless you know how to solder, you're better off buying an unpatched Switch.
