Hacking Help With NSMBW Tilset Graphics

Has anybody figured out the file format for the tileset graphics? I know the tileset files can be obtained in the following manner:

-Browse to folder /Stage/Texture in wiiScrubber or equivalent
-Extract any of the files there (each arc contains a different tileset)
-Extract the resulting arc using any U8 utility
-There will be at least 4 files (could be more) extracted, the one ending in _tex.bin.LZ is the texture
-Use wwcxtool to decompress said _tex.bin.LZ file

The process will result in some sort of raw image data. I've been playing with it in tile molester with no luck at producing any recognizable shapes. Hex editing the files reveals a lot of two byte patterns are repeated, leading me to believe the format is some sort of 16bpp and not paletted, but I could be way off mark.
