what exactly should i google for this?
Simply put you need a bigger save file.

[Now, here's the thing: Pokemon Emerald uses a 128kb-large Flash save file. The CIA we made using Ultimate VC Injector, despite the fact that we specified FLASH-type memory with RTC, only makes a 64kb-large save file. Whoops[

And to follow this guide: Not all links may work:

https://projectpokemon.org/home/forums/topic/57872-corrupted-save-after-elite-four-in-emerald/

Edit:

[
Steps to Make a 128kb CIA:

  1. Open New Super Ultimate Injector for 3DS. You can get it here: https://wiidatabase.de/3ds-downloads/pc-tools/new-super-ultimate-injector-for-3ds/
  2. It's in Spanish, I know. Just bear with me here.
  3. At the upper-left corner, click "Archivo", then select "Nuevo" > "CIA de Game Boy Advance".
  4. A new tab will open in the program. Click the tab name, then select "Cargar ROM...".
  5. Navigate to the .gba file you definitely got through legitimate means, and click "Open".
  6. Since this ROM wasn't hex-edited, pretty much all of the data should autofill. All you need to do is set the icon and 3D banner images for the home screen.
    • "Descargar" means "download", "desde" means "from". You should be able to figure out what the rest means.
    • Also, you can click the "Virtual Console" nameplate thing to change the text displayed there.
  7. Once you have it customized to your liking, right-click the tab again, click "Guardar" to save the project, then click "Exportar CIA..." to get your CIA file.
  8. Put the CIA on your micro SD card and use FBI to install it.]

You probably want to try this next: https://github.com/aspargas2/3ds_hw_test

There is no ready to use build unfortunately. Note that you need to be patient and wait for both screens to say all tests are finished. It can take a long time.
how exactly do i use/install this? and also, is it possible that maybe some 3DS system file of mine could be corrupted? maybe reformatting in some way shape or form would fix things? i would guess that AGB_FIRM could be corrupted, but OPEN AGB FIRM didn't work either, so.

You can try this build i just made. As said, do not turn the 3DS off even if it appears to be stuck. Wait until both screens say it's finished. It will write the results into a log file in the root of the SD card as well.

i haven't run this yet, but is there nothing else that could be causing this issue? if it helps at all, the whole SYSTEM doesn't freeze--i can actually hit the home button and go home just fine. and the only game this happens with is emerald. does this help in figuring this out at all?

@SylverReZ, I dislike the kind of drm where you have to play single player games online all the time bc of some verification bs

@Xdqwerty, Don't use games that have Easy Anti-Cheat as its been exploited many times.

@SylverReZ, I also heard one of the Prince of Persia games was so unfinished that it required the "24/7 online" drm so a puzzle could be done and the game could be finished. And that when the Ubisoft servers were closed the (cracked) game was impossible to finish or something like that
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, That's extra scummy. Ubisoft nowadays ship out incomplete games like Skull and Bones which was being worked on for nearly a decade now.

I like that games can be fixed after the fact, hate that it's being abused via beta tests... And DLC... I was a 7800 owner back in the day and loved Impossible Mission, turns out I couldn't beat it because it was actually impossible lol
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I never knew about it at the time but a fixed version was available but you had to mail in your broken copy lol
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
So that version is semi rare
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@Psionic Roshambo, I have a rom of the ds version of impossible mission
