ROM Hack Help making a pokemon oras/xy save editor

I am required to make an application for a computer science class. we are programming in python. I decided that I want to make a program that can decrypt, edit then encrypt the save. I was looking for help in making it look as clean as possible. I would prefer help in finding out how to encrypt / decrypt saves and where in the saves to edit items and money, nothing too complex. I can do the programming as long as I have the encr/decr understood and where the locations in memory are.

Also check out pchex++ (it's on the homebrew section of nintendo 3ds discussions). It's a homebrew based editor so that is a huge amount of work already.
