Although I already have a PS3 and 360, I didn't really care about this format war. But now that we have a big 40'' screen, I never knew movies could be THIS good looking. Seriously, watching SDTV content looked like shit in my eyes after watching some Blu-ray movies and trailers. But I guess i'll go with Blu-ray, since all the movie studios are behind it.

Since both can't be used with Linux my bet is on Matroska and x264. That's what most pirate high definition content comes in - all DRM free

.
actually HD-DVD is going to be available to linux very soon, im expecting Blu Ray to follow very soon, since they have now been fully cracked
Correct me if I'm wrong, but AFAIK neither of them have been fully cracked yet. It's just the private key of PowerDVD that has been found, which all current "cracking" solutions are based on (e.g. aacskeys, which works for both formats). Once this key is revoked new HDDVD/BluRay discs won't be decodeable anymore, thus no more Linux playback, too.

HDDVD/BluRay = DRM infested crap.

You are correct. It is not a a crack just a key. WinDVD was the application that produced the key and they have already been revoked from future BR/HD discs.

I still don't understand why HD would put a SD version on one side of the disc and charge more money for it. DUMB DUMB DUMB!!!!

I have the HD player for my Xbox 360. I don't know why I bought it. I never use it. I have HD satellite and a Media Centre that can play HD on my 84" screen. You won't see me running out to by $30 movies.

Oh and just because all the studios are backing BR doesn't mean shit. They just like the format that is most DRM'd. If you can recall, Disney and Paramount both full fully backed the Divx format as their preferred and only. That didn't last very long. Once players come down to a reasonable price you will see which format wins. Personally I just see BluRay and another blotched format from Sony just like UMD.

The porn industry said they want to go Blu-Ray but Sony appearently said no from the last time I checked my sources on the matter. And while porn is mainly pushed on the internet it still has high product selling potential.....porn was really used to push the DVD market place with it's multiple angle feature....which got consumers attention and I believe started putting the system into more peoples homes. The average consumer didn't care about quality of picture other wise they would have jumped on the laserdisc bandwagon....but quality of picture was not enough to get people to make the switch.....a gimmicky XXX virtual reality on the other hand where you can play director is just what the format needed. However I think that it the past the industry has excelled products by offering new things like VHS allowed you to stop going to theaters to get your smut, DVDs offered you multiple angles and the internet brought you total privacy .... not even going to smut shops or having embarrassing packages brought to your door. There is no innovation with the next format besides maybe 10 hours of bargain porn on one HD DVD and that is really not enough to push the public to make the switch. I foresee both formats going the way of UMD and laserdisc and DVD up converters will be the current winner!

They should both be destroyed since who in their right mind would go buy their dvd collection all over again for a slight picture quality, also they haven't even used the full potential of dvd's yet.

A fair few DVDs are poorly mastered, especially outside R1. Quite how they mess up a FILM to PAL conversion I will never know but they do, the lack of extras gets noticeable as well.

I reckon a move to better standards while using the same discs would be good: loads of players support MPEG4 ASP (divx/xvid) out of the box these days and in my opinion the only thing MPEG2 has going for it is that it does not need that much power to decode).

Using the older MPEG-2 codec BluRay wins due to the greater disc space.

Alot of reviews have placed the HD-DVD version higher than the BluRay version with better picture and audio quality.

They both use the same video codecs so in theory dual format releases should be the same.

Although they share the same audio codecs the BluRay supports higher bitrates in most cases.

BluRay has reduced the regions to 3 but HD-DVD doesn't have them at all.

I vote neither at this time, they both have advantages over the other.

HD-DVDs and BluRay have had some poorly mastered discs, it would be nice if they put more effort into all releases but that takes time and money.

I don't know whether this is true or not but I saw it.
There was a high quality graphics comparison video showing about 30 seconds of footage from Call of Duty 3 from each console.
The Wii one was the blockiest and the PS3 graphics looked artifacted like when you save a JPEG in low quality. I don't know whether the artifacts were from the game or the format but for this reason I choose HD-DVD.
I don't really have any real preference though as I won't be using either of them for a few years.

Aie it makes sense, bananas are yellow and leaves tend to fall during autumn so I'll go with HD-DVD

I dont have anything against both companies so I will just choose for the better quality disc -> Blu Ray. They say HD dvds are cheaper to manufacture but it only takes a few cents to make a HD dvd and it gets sold for 60 usd anyways , so I still think the Blu Ray wont be more expensive then a HD dvd...

While Sony is lacking ins console sales, their Blu-ray sales are extremely high. And i really think the idea of including a Blu-ray player in every PS3 will help Sony in a year or two.

But...i think by 5 years, we will definitely have a better distribution format, something cheaper and that can hold more. We might even see digital distribution increase...

I dont know if this has been previously mentioned, but because Blu ray uses the older MPEG-2 codec the extra 30 gb is almost pointless because the codec is so bad at compression.

Sony is on a losing streak and due to their uncanny sense of pissing people of at the wrong time Blue ray will fail.

Even if all of their movies only surface on their platform the name of the game is sales. When you are not selling you are just wasting money ....

no. it uses all the same video codecs as HD-DVD. check your facts before you say something. the first gen blu-ray discs used MPEG2 because the programs they used to encode didn't have VC-1 (since DVD uses MPEG2 as well). but now mostly all use VC-1 (and there are HD-DVD with MPEG2)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDDVD#HD_DVD_...disc_comparison

blu-ray also has a higher bitrates (by a huge margin). bluray discs can play video with a bit rate of 40mbit/s while HD-DVD peaks at 29.4mbit/s

it's also mandatory for bluray to be hardcoated to prevent scratching. the only benefit HD-DVD really has is region free. but that's just about it. in terms of space, bluray gives your more space per price.

and don't talk about dual-layered or triple-layered HD-DVD because then you should compare to dual-layered blu-ray. and one single layered blu-ray disc is cheaper than one dual-layered HD-DVD

HD-DVD is obviously an inferior product, but people are pissed off at Sony so much for their horrible PS3 PR that they've become anti-Sony, meaning anti-Bluray
