IOS58 Installer does one thing, and one thing only - download and install IOS58 from the Nintendo update servers. This process does not involve any system-critical parts of the system, and is completely safe. IOS58 is required for USB 2.0 support in homebrew applications and is the default IOS used by HBC 1.0.8+. It is included in System Menu 4.3, but those who do not wish to update to 4.3 can just run this installer to get the benefits of IOS58.
Thoughts?

I believe IOS58 has some USB related functions in it, IIRC.

EDIT: Yep, it provides support for the USB Camera used by the game "Your Shape."

Tantric also released a version of dosbox and SMW that use IOS58. Would assume WiiMC and others will follow.

SVN builds of libogc can now use IOS58 for usb 2.0 instead of having to use a cIOS.

What I find myself asking and not seeing anyone else asking is WHY does this IOS have usb2 support?

This IOS is used for that game erm.. your shape ? I think is the name of it and it allows a usb camera. But then why not limit it to USB1 ?

I don't know enough without reading, but I'm sure that's overkill and it was going to be exploited for sure, so why did N not just limit the speed ?

Quick Edit for some speculating.....

"Nintendo has filed a patent for a process that transfers Wii games to a hard drive."

Could this be why ?!? doubt it, but maybe...

i don't think ios58 is necessary for usb support of hbc apps.

My apps work fine in hbc from usb fat32 without ios58
(MMM, YAWM etc.)

Maybe the cam needs a high transfer speed to correctly stream the (probably huge?) amount of data? Just a guess.

The camera sends a lot of time-sensitive data, hence the need for USB2. IOS57 would be more suited to the patent link, but it's incomplete.

so 4.3 actually had something useful afterall...and now it's ours

... wow

Homebrew apps currently use a custom ios (usually 202) for usb 2.0 support.

HBC 1.0.8 and other homebrew apps will be switching to ios58 soon.

I wonder if 58 has better device support or improved performance? neither?

I would imagine they want to move to this because it would not be effected by the stubbing problem that the 2XXs have

Is it really necessary to have an unpatched IOS58? Will it hurt if it is Trucha-patched?
