You don't even need to do that (and I personally wouldn't recommend it either). All you need to do is turn the system off in emunand and turn it back on. Simple as that.
If you need to install something in sysNAND while in Gateway mode, then you need to remove the sd card.
Reason why you might want to be in both sysNAND and Gateway mode is to install things like cearp's DS flashcard time machine or CN (Since you sysNAND is 9.2 or below)

Yes a mSD in an adapter will work. The other advantage with this approach is the N3DS does not use a SD just mSD. What are you going to put in the red card?

There is one problem with your plan on being an SD card miser. If you go into eShop in emunand all your cia files will get deleted, at least your illegit ones. So if you plan on using eShop you will need a second SD emunand and no cia files for downloading content. You could get ny with one and deal with backing up and moving files all over place but that is a lot of time tapping your fingers as GBs go back and forth. A 32GB SD is about $14 on sale on Amazon.

If it makes you feel any better think about all the early GW users that needed a mSD FOR EACH GAME befor multi rom menu was released.
I have another micro SD for the red card.

Wow another emunand? Do I then have to make sure those 2 are "unlinked"? This is getting awfully com plicated!

I don't intend to use eshop a while lot beyond pokebank and transporter, maybe the occasional demo. Will my 4gb SD suffice?

It gets even more complicated. Lol.
Once you unlink the nands the copies of emunand will be unlinked as well.
Your 4gb Sd will be fine for the "eshop only" emunand you will just be limited on how much data you can download at once. Just remember making a backup of emunand is not as simple as copying files. The actual emunand is in a separate partition so you need to use the emunand tool.

Err... but the kicks you out of Gateway Mode...
The original question was "How do I return to sysNAND after installing emuNAND?"

A suggested solution was to remove the SD card, which, while in emuNAND, would completely freeze and lock up the system. The safest and simplest way to return is by turning the system off.

So yes, it does kick you out of Gateway mode.

Um no, my question was how to boot into systemNAND IN Gateway Mode after formatting emuNANAD, seeing as after you do that it always boots into emuNAND.

The only way you can boot into gateway mode without emuNAND is to simply not format emuNAND. For you, it basically means getting another SD card and copying the Launcher.DAT to that.

I had some rough ideas about the save compatibility and downgrading, but this is the thread that confirms them.

Is gateway capable of checking for both save encryption and using the right keys depending on the active firmware? If this is within their capability, it should make things a lot simpler.

Lastly, it would be nice to make a crosstable for the various save conversion scenarios

Ok I have a question it has to do with saves/data/etc.

Starting off when I first backed up my nand I had to delete some data on my sd card to make room, this meant also removing the data that I assume was attached to my eshop Animal Crossing game, I backed it up on my computer before deleting it though so it still exists. I did the nand thing and and backed that up, then deleted that so I could do emunand, which now takes up most of the space on my SD card, which means no SSB right now.

Now I have a new SD card a 16 gb one and I am wondering can I combine the animal crossing data + my emunand to finally get everything all together?

New to the 3DS scene, impulse bought a 3DS XL at 6.x and a Gateway the other day. Waiting for them to arrive and just learning my stuff so I can get going when they do.

So I'd rather use the blue card exploit than the browser one, and was therefore planning on downgrading to 4.x. However after reading the OP I'm a bit confused; are you saying that if I downgrade to 4.5, I won't be able to play any new games like OR/AS or Majora's Mask?

Only if you start playing these games on a 6.0 or above system, and if you save your game while on 6.0 or above. So if you haven't started these games and will need to make brand-new saves, you can play these games without issue and saving should work correctly. But you can never play them on another 3DS with 6.0+ and bring your saves back to your 3DS.

Oh that's no problem then, thanks very much pal.

Sorry to bother you, i'm not in this situation so i don't care, but want to figure out.
So if you start a "new game" on 6.x+ play and save, then you downgrade to 4.5 sysnand and try to launch the retail card in 9.4 emunand, you will have the message of broken save. Correct?
So in this case, will the system let you erase your "broken" save and allow you to start a new one?
Thanks

Yes. The game will tell you the save is corrupted and needs to be erased. You can start a new game after this, and saving will work again.

It's worth noting that this is not exclusive to emuNAND or Gateway; it will happen on any <6.0 system.

Hi,

I played several games using my gateway cart and therefore have several .sav files on the root of my sd. Now I want to install my games as .cia. Is there a way to inject those .sav saves into my installed games via savedatafiler?

This is so confusing to me...

Using Gateway and Emunand can I still play retail carts?

Does Pokemon save to cart? If so it is card 2 then, which means if I own a retail cart I can continue to play it on a system I use gateway on?

So if i back up my 4.5 nand to my pc - even if I upgrade to 9.4 on the sysnand I can restore back to 4.5 using the nand backup I have and flashing via the Nand modification? But that would not allow me to use gateway since it is above 9.2?

SO what is the best balance? I want to be able to play retail carts but also have my gateway with mutirom support? I want online access and eshop support too?

Anyone wanna help a guy out here? I really want my old saves back and to have emunand on my new sd card

**Update! I formatted the new sd card and put my old Nintendo 3DS folder on it and booted up the console an Animal Crossing is present, the question I now have is, can I make a new nand backup/emunand and just transfer my saves to the new emunand and be peachy?

This is the answer you're looking for:
  1. Backup emunand with emunand tool
  2. Dump system nand to backup using gw launcher
  3. Inject system nand backup using emunand tool
You'll boot into "system nand linked emunand". It'll still be emunand, but it'll be linked like it was when you first formatted emunand.

It sounds like just moving everything to the bigger SD card should work, as long as you never at any point formatted your 3ds.

Hi,

Nope. The fact that it saved on the SD card as .sav files means that they are probably card 1 games, and you can't currently use savedatafiler with card 1 games in Gateway mode. I really wish you could.

This is so confusing to me...

Using Gateway and Emunand can I still play retail carts?

A more simple way of putting things is: If you start your retail game on sysnand >6.0, it won't work on 4.x. It goes the other way around too, if you start your game on sysnand <6.0, it won't work on >6.0. This is only true for games that use >6.0 encryption.
