I have an R4, I assumed in getting this I would be able to play GBA games via using the boot slot 2 option on the menu, but when I do it says it cant find any nds or gba games. Is this correct or have I made an error and is it impossible to do?
You're incorrect in assuming that the "R4" itself lets you play GBA games without some additional hardware. Since while the R4 is in place the DS boots directly to the R4 interface, the Slot 2 choice from the menu is the only way to launch a legit GBA cartridge inserted into the DS.
And the posts are many and quite heated about the topic of running GBA games from the R4... Don't go there unless you wear asbestos underwear.
That said, there is a reasonably simple and inexpensive solution and that's the EZ-Flash 3-in-1 Slot 2 device along with a freeware homebrew called GBA ExpLoader by a Japanese programmer that goes by the name Rudolph. As I write this the current version is 0.56. Older versions of the application were called Rudolph's 3in1 Expansion Pack Tool. GBA ExpLoader replaces that and more.
So go order the EZ-Flash 3-in-1 and report back...

Ahh... I didn't follow the link you posted so I thought you believed you could run GBA games from the R4 alone. My mistake...
I don't know if this works with the R4. The EZ-Flash 3-in-1 certainly does...
