That's been done by several people - don't think there was a specific 8.1 report but certainly game cart updates with lower firmware have been reported in this and other threads. But of course, your caution is is still sensible at the moment - there are people who have several 3ds consoles who can do the experimentation - should all be clear what is safe and what is not safe in a few days.

Upgrading sysnand from a genuine cart OR rom (after downgrading to 4.x with gateway ultra 3.0) seems safe
BUT renaming an emunand file to NAND.BIN and doing a sysnand restore is only reported by one person and that should NOT BE CONSIDERED SAFE YET.

So ever since I downgraded I've been having issues updating games. every time I install an update and select the game again, it tells me that the games need updating

Why must the EmuNAND version be below 8.0? Is this limitation due to code that Gateway put in place (for people that don't have Gateway cards) or...? And how could I update my EmuNAND to firmware version 7.x?

Gateway made the flashcart necessary for EmuNAND8+ and (I think) cia compatibility.
You can update using a ROM (as updating using cia would require the flashcart).

There's a thread with information about save and game header, but if you only want to play ROM with 2.x key, you don't need anything as gateway is patching it for you automatically.
I don't have the link right now, you can search it or someone else will provide it.

I mentionned only one tool : Savedata filer. this is a Devkit tool, so you won't find any link here.

The other one is part of the gateway menu (keep L pressed when booting gateway, there's a menu to extract/inject saves to cartridge)

I restored my 9.2 sysNAND from backup. Everything went ok. The saves on my Smas Bros and Link Between Worlds carts worked again.

I did some crafty Googling and installed savedatafiler. I backed up everything from the carts that it allowed me to. Now I have a whole bunch of files, and I am not even sure they are from the cart.

Has anyone had any luck yet getting 6+ encrypted saves to work on a downgraded system?

This thread on MaxConsole seems to suggest it is not possible yet, but that someone is working on a decryption program... Can anyone confirm this?

I think were talking about something completely different. I basically want to know if I can dump my legit games to ROMs and still use the savegames afterwards. I read that's usually not possible because a legit >6.x-system uses another savegame-encryption mode in comparison to Gateway in Gateway-mode.

Guys thanks for the tutorial, I have done everything to downgrade but dont understand step 11, install blue card exploit since I have never done that ( I did this all the very first time and never used Gateway before). Can someone point me on how to perform this "blue card exploit" ? Thanks in advance

One thing that bothers me is that the launcher.dat file is on the root of my 3ds internal SD card from when I did the Gateway 3.0 install before the downgrade files were released, I am assuming this can be overwritten without issues?

However when I went and clicked on the Deep Lab icon the 3ds complained that there was an error, and it will now power off.

EDIT4: Got it working, for those who may end up like myself, after your downgrade to 4.2 is successful, put the Gateway Blue card files into your micro SD card then place that into your blue gateway card. Put the blue gateway card into the DS (after a fresh reboot so your not in Gateway Mode but regular sysnand your fresh 4.2) then click on the Deep Lab icon and run the gateway installer, instructions here. http://www.maxconsole.com/maxcon_forums/threads/285759-How-to-setup-your-gateway-with-a-3DS-4-x Once that is complete restart and test it will work.

How can I get the EmuNAND to update? I have a bit of a strange set up here because I don't have a Gateway card: 9.2 on the SysNAND (so I can play my newer titles) and 4.2 on the EmuNAND (I formatted EmuNAND when my SysNAND was downgraded to 4.2.) I'm trying to use A Link Between Worlds, but it lets me play the game without having to update EmuNAND to 6.x or 7.x. I also tried wiping all save data from the cart but it still let me go straight to playing the game. I also tried the same things with Mario and Luigi: Dream Team but the same thing happened. Any idea what's wrong?

You will not lose any data if you remove the SD card with the emuNAND on.

The only other way to downgrade is with a ds flash cart and cfw as far as I know

Nevermind. It doesn't matter anyways. Master's 3DS is 9.4.x, so this is useless to me. Hopefully, an exploit to run in 9.4.x will be discovered.

Starting a new post, I can confirm downgrading my 3ds XL 9.2 U to 4.2 with no issues. Eshop works as I had not linked it before the downgrade. After downgrade I went into Gateway Exploit mode and started the E-SHOP up on latest EMUNAND and linked it with my Club ID. Everything so far works as it should.

Console 3ds xl Yoshi Edition Purchased 4 days ago NEW
Firmware out of box: 6.2.0.12E
Current firmware: 4.5.0.8E
Emunand Current: GW3D-9.4.0.21E
SPECIAL NOTE: When I upgraded from Emu-nand-FW GW3D 4.5.0.8E I had to wait a full 45 MINUTES ... strange because when I upgraded Emu-nand with another 3ds xl FW 4.5.0 Native it took only 15 Minutes

Guys I just experienced a weird issue. After the BLUE card exploit was done and confirmed working by going to settings - other settings- profile-ds profile, it no longer works. Not sure how this would have happened, anyone else experience this?

Nevermind, after some searching it seems if you run a DS game (I tested the blue card by putting roms on it and playing a game) you lose the exploit and have to reinstall it. No biggie.
