Just a query my XL is on 4.3.0 and would not mind updating it to 4.5.0 so you say underlined you can but how I cannot seem to do this bit? or do you need a full retail game to update In system nand:-
Can I update from 4.2 or 4.4 to 4.5?
Yes, but it's NOT NEEDED.
You can use a game cartridge (Luigi Mansion, or animal crossing for example)
You can also use Gateway without emuNAND partition, press UP when entering Gateway Mode and launch Luigi Mansion or any other 4.5.0-x game

I have 9.2 emuNAND and sysNAND 4.5, I want to experiment going up to 9.2 sysNAND, is it possible to update sysNAND with a dumped emuNAND 9.2? Also is it possible to update using a 3ds rom?

If that's possible I'll eat the rest of my underpants

edit: there are no 3ds roms with a 9.2 update

edit2: and I'd definitely wait for more info before trying a sysnand recovery from a renamed emunand file

These games use the old encryption even if you're on >6.x, right?
there are three different savegame encryption method.
the old one "reapating CTRFail" (a simple and small XOR data repeated)
the 2.x (a lot of game used, and still use it)
the 6.x (a lot of newer games use it, but not all of them)

The game decide which encryption to use, not the console.
So there are still games using the 2.x method, which work on all SysNAND Version.

Games header (in ROM format) requesting 6.x can be patched to use 2.x or CTRFail instead.
Gateway is probably patching the header at launch to always use 2.x method/keyY.
Patching is done only on ROM and in Gateway mode, not in classic mode.

And regarding this part:
In which order do I do what if I want to downgrade? First create EmuNAND and everything and as a last step downgrade? Or will this introduce problems?
About the order, you should create EmuNAND before downgrading. It will have NNID and will be already updated for eShop access. (less update to download).
There is another thread with guide for eShop and downgrade order.

Shadowtrance claims that he did that.

Yep that's the first thing i did with the downgrader. Upgraded my 4.5 sysnand to 9.2 with an emunand backup (renamed to NAND.BIN) and then proceeded to downgrade again a while after that with the gateway dg file.

Though I just tried to upgrade my SysNAND to an EmuNAND 9.0 and it looks like it failed. After the NAND was completely written my 3DS doesn't boot anymore (no error code, just black screen). So I would be careful with that.
Now I have to get a hard mod for my 3DS (not a bad thing anyway). :)

You have two methods:

1- use retail cartridge with a 4.5.0 update

2- use a ROM with a 4.5.0 update, and NO emuNAND partition.
But Gateway is spoofing the update, so in order to trigger the update prompt you need to disable the spoofing.
go to NDS profile, launch it and keep pressed Dpad UP (like when you press L to enter the gateway menu, but here it's UP).
the ROM will ask you to update.

the underlined part is clear, no? what didn't you understand so I can write is better? When I say "use Gateway", I imply to use a ROM, or else you could just use a cartridge without GW.
or maybe you tried and it didn't work?

Have you formated emunand after downgrading? If yes your emunand is now on Version 4.5. You have to update emunand according to this guide (Step 1.2). If you have a backup of your old emunand you can restore it with emunandtool.
Yes I said that did it just again and I install the files on the blue card.
Wouldn't I be back to the newer firmware if I r

I just want to emunand to 9.4.

Edit: I have checked a video and I totally forgot the step that you need to do system update.

Does that require hardware modification?

nope...just with gateway 3ds menu you can restore a previous NAND dump, so you can select the dump you want, as a custom firmware can be xD but this can brick a 3ds so better to don't do, the only way to repare a brick it's open your 3ds and solder some cable to hardware to an SD extension, put in PC and forcing write to 3ds internal NAND...so you have to decide...

I don't have a Gateway card. After I downgrade will it be possible to use emuNAND and CFW WITHOUT a gateway card?
Ps: My 3DS is the USA version and I have a DS flashcart that supposedly works on 4.2
it's possible to use EmuNAND without a Gateway as long as your EmuNAND version is below 8.0
But you will not be able to install cia, access eshop, nor launch ROMs without GW. it probably doesn't have real interest for you.
Current cFW can be used without gateway, but you don't have every features (no online gaming for example), but you can install cia.

I have a US XL on 9.2. No downloaded retail games, just eshop games (nes, snes, etc...) and the ambassador games. I do not have a gateway purchased yet. Are there any potential issues for me downgrading to 4.2?

There shouldn't be any problems no, just make sure you backup your NAND as it is now (I don't think the downgrader lets you progress without one anyway) so you can easily go back if something does go awry.

There's no benefit if you don't have Gateway, except that you can launch Kernel mode Homebrew.
edit: oh, and less blocked DS flashcarts.
edit2: another benefit is you can make a 4.x emuNAND which is needed for cFW debugger. I'll add it to first post.

I'm on about if you want to update from a rom like ssb with 8.1 dude, think I'll wait for someone with a nand mod to varify this thanks

Does launching kernal mode homebrew require a ds flashcard or cubic ninja?

Why must the EmuNAND version be below 8.0? Is this limitation due to code that Gateway put in place (for people that don't have Gateway cards) or...? And how could I update my EmuNAND to firmware version 7.x?
