GBAtemp Exclusive Gaming Perfection: Bubsy 3D

    Front-page GBAtemp Exclusive
Ah, welcome back to our annual article series, “Gaming Perfection”. I know it takes place on the first of April, but dear GBATemp readers, please don’t think these are ever written as a mere joke. My previous writings of years passed have always been without any hint of satire, so I urge you to join me on this latest journey, and read every word with absolute seriousness. It is just an unfortunate coincidence that I tend to write these on the same day as April Fools, but I hope you’ll find it in your heart to pawsibly forgive that once you learn what game we’ll be talking about.

Previously, I’ve proved without a shadow of a doubt that the other two entries we’ve discussed, Sonic ‘06 and Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon, are nothing short of perfection. The true peak of their respective genre, standing above the rest, defining and inspiring players and creators years after their release. Truly, the pinnacle of achievement, and something that should be treated with reverence. Today’s game is no different, joining the likes of complete and utter astoundingly quality games that one should experience at any cost in order to call themselves a true gamer.

Remember back to the days of the 1990s, a decade full of radical and wild ideas, resulting in innovation and fledgling concepts. During that fated era, we saw the height of the 16-bit era, all the way up to birth of 3D games. Mascot platformers shone their brightest at this time, endlessly trying to grasp onto the success that Mario and Sonic both had. Rocky Rodent, Awesome Possum, Ristar, and Gex were all cutesy characters that tried to push their way into the hearts of video game players worldwide. Don’t worry if you cannot recall some of these events or names, though, after all, only 90s kids remember when.

A name that everyone should remember, however, is Bubsy.

First making his appearance in 1993, Bubsy blasted onto the scene, with enough attitude and charm to rival the likes of Sonic the Hedgehog. And unlike Mario or Sonic, Bubsy actually had a decent first game. For the uninformed, Bubsy 3D, or if you wish to be respectful towards such a work of art you may call it Bubsy 3D: Furbitten Planet, is the fourth magnificent video game in the series that I will be informing you about on this lovely day. Of course, while many of you should recognize the beauty of Bubsy 3D, many people out there have not yet been blessed by the magical experience of playing Bubsy 3D. I implore you go and play this amazing game, perhaps once it no-doubt releases on Google Stadia so that the most people possible can enjoy it in its purest form.

Oh, you might be thinking that Super Mario 64 was the one to "revolutionize" 3D platforming games, but it was clearly rushed out, in fear of sales being decimated by the soon-to-release Bubsy 3D. Nintendo was obviously and rightfully afraid, and made sure to sabotage the competition by trying to trick the public into thinking that their game was the definitive 3D experience. I mean, Mario 64 doesn't even have tank controls, who even would want to play some floaty platformer that doesn't have tank controls? Alas, many poor fools fell for Nintendo's evil tricks, and still actually think that the company managed to make a good game past the SNES era. Wake up, sheeple, their last good game was Mario Clash, don't you understand?!

Bubsy and cat puns...still a better love story than Twilight

Overall, there is not a single shortcoming or impurrfection to be found--I'm not kitten around here. There's a meowntain of fun to be had, and you won't pawsibly regret playing this un-fur-gettable game.

Let us not forget how Bubsy 3D achieved the prestigious and reputable Gold X Award. There are so few titles that have even been awarded with the Gold X seal of quality, and Bubsy has truly earned it. Accolade absolutely nailed every factor of a video game, from the voice acting, to the level design, and the graphics. Especially the graphics. You might think that the levels look like traditional beta build testing rooms painted jarring colors, but they’re more than that. The developers did this as a stylistic choice, adhering to deep franchise lore and, highlighting the inner struggle that Bubsy deals with on his journey by making everything a dizzying palette, representing his confusion from being on an alien planet. Plus, Bubsy's enemies don't really have arms. You can't expect them to create structures that look halfway decent without any arms. That's just rude.

So, I hope this helped you understand just why Bubsy 3D: Furbitten Planet is the greatest game ever made. Hopefully, this has inspired you to go try the game out for yourself, as well. I can entirely promise you that it would be an April 1st well spent. Be sure to invite your parents, siblings, and friends to play Bubsy with you. And if you don't have friends, I'm sure that homeless man on the street corner would totally appreciate being dragged into your living room in order to finally live his lifelong dream of playing Bubsy 3D.

Luckily, Bubsy 3D isn't the end... as the world has been graced by more Bubsy goodness, with the release of a new game in 2017, and another exciting upcoming adventure set for later this year. We should consider ourselves grateful that the undeserving masses are still allowed to play new games in such a beloved series. While no game will ever match just how flawless Bubsy 3D was, we will always remember the purrfection that once was.

See you again next year (: -SDATemp

Will an entry in the Mario series ever rise to the level of Bubsy 3D? I seriously doubt it.

    Literally invented a genre.

Without this there would be no Super Mario 64.

    An all time classic.

I’ll be right out to purchase this content immediately. A day one purchase for me on the very day it is available. I’m so in love! But if I can’t get it in 1080p 4K streaming 120fps twitch Snapchat, then it’ll just be a waste. I’ve got my hammer cocked on my switch, ready for depression of trigger.

I had to look up Rocky Rodent and Awesome Possum because they sounded made up among all the others, but they're actually real games.

As a fan of the Bubsy series, I must admit that Bubsy has never looked this good in 3D. Well, that's mainly because it's the only 3D Bubsy game ever.
