Fallout 2 ported to the PlayStation Vita twice with two new separate homebrew releases

itamfalout.png

While there might not be any modern re-releases of the old-school Fallout games in an official capacity, modders have been picking up the slack, and then some. Releasing back to back are two separate Fallout 2 ports to the PlayStation Vita, from two different homebrew developers. Isage posted their project, with Northfear following up with their own release a mere few hours later. Both of these ports come from the Fallout 2 Community Edition, an open source version of the game, including community-made performance patches. Going further into the homebrew rabbit hole, Fallout 2 CE was the result of yet another project--Fallout 2 Reference Edition--which was the original reverse engineering project.

Both of the Fallout 2 PS Vita ports are available to download: Isage's version is at v1.2 on GitHub, while Northfear's is at v1.0 and is on VitaDB. In order to get either running on your Vita, you'll need to own the Steam or GOG release of Fallout 2, and copy master.dat, critter.dat, patch000.dat, data, and the sound folders from your PC installation into ux0:/data/fallout2/. Both homebrew developers have worked on Vita projects in the past; Isage has previously ported the Streets of Rage fan remake to the Vita, while Northfear has worked on porting Heroes of Might and Magic II to the Vita.

Please tell me a Wii U version is in the works. I've noticed that decomps ported to the Vita often go hand-in-hand with a Wii U release as well. Not always mind you, but I would say it is often enough to feel like a pattern.

Seems Vita means "afterlife", the amount of ports this baby is getting recently is amazing.
Still to this day the OLED screen looks really nice.

However, the Slim model had a Micro USB port which I rather prefer than the proprietary one, but oh well. Ideally? An OLED Vita with a USB-C. 🙂 Some modder(s) out there have definitely made it possible.

I am a huge Fallout 2 fan. For me this is the essence of everything what Fallout is about.
Played this game since the release multiple playthrougs. It still amazes me till this day.
If such a port where there years ago: man I would never stop playing this 24/7 everywhere.
Amazing Job!

Cool. The GoG version seems to be pretty easy to get via nefarious means too.
Looking at both versions it's unclear if one performs better than the other - anyone tried both that can provide a comparrisson? If not I'll probably go with trying Northfear's first as that's been updated more recently, plus he provided a fix to the apparent sluggishness in Isage's port.

@BakerMan, Any idea what happened? I hope that your brother's doing good.
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
Well, from what I've heard from my parents, he had a seizure last night, perhaps an epileptic episode, fucking died, had a near death experience, my dad called the paramedics, they showed up, took him to the hospital, and he woke up covered in tubes, and started complaining.
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
He couldn't eat until after his MRI, when he had a bomb pop.
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
What matters now is that he's doing alright.
  • Veho @ Veho:
But you still don't know what it was?

    Has he had seizures before?
