Hardware External HDD Not Working

I recently got a 1TB external hard drive (pretty old and from what I've seen, Doesn't use SATA after opening it up). I formatted it to Fat32 with no other partitions. I loaded my Roms on to it and hooked it up and according to the PS3 there was nothing. Any thoughts?

What Roms? PS3? Ps2? If PS3 they need to be in a folder named 'GAMES'

Clarify what you mean by "and nothing":

1. The hard drive itself is not detected. I.e. when going to anything on the XMB that might access the external drive, the drive is not listed.
2. Or, the drive shows up, but you don't see anything in the drive.

If the drive does show up, are you placing whatever you want to load into proper directories?
