I know I keep reiterating the same thought (and it may be annoying to some) but what's your opinion (obvious we don't have facts) on using CIA files?

Well, I've been playing a .3DZ game for the past 2 days after I get home for a few hours made with my own personal game rip and I haven't received a ban yet

Yeah that seems completely safe. All offline games are good. All personally ripped games are good. And if the common theory is correct, .3dz games with private headers (even from different games, offline or online) are good. Public headers are risky and most likely the cause of the bans. CIAs seem safe for now, but that may change.

But if Nintendo does try to ban people with CIA files by cross checking them to see if they were bought, that would take quite a bit of effort on their part. They'd either have to have initial reason to suspect you before running the check, or do random checks periodically, or somehow check everyone who has played a 3DS game online. And they'd have to do that regularly (and we know their servers suck, that's take up a lot of resources).

Do we know if these banned users have a Wii U? I am curious if the whole Nintendo Network account gets banned or if Nintendo only bans the 3DS system, what would happen if these people tried to log in with their accounts on a Wii U, would they get the same error message?

Well it seems that it's a hardware ban, not just on the NNID. For all we know they can get another 3DS and login and use the same NNID. Nobody's tested this yet. But as for the Wii U, that's not banned. It wouldn't really make much sense for Nintendo to ban both. Especially since at the moment you can't pirate Wii U games so basically if you ban both consoles, they're potentially losing a lot of revenue.

it just seems like an odd situation. It reminds of the 360 bans. Although Microsoft really did do it in one fell swoop. But they knew what they were looking for. It was the dvd firmware. But honestly maybe Nintendo can only implement certain parameters. Maybe it's tied to a certain game on a public header. Obviously this is all speculation but it's been interesting ready the theory.

I'm waiting on my N3DS I have no private dumps since I'm coming to from sony (bitter vita owner). If anyone has any they wanna part shoot me a pm. We can discuss specifics (if asking that is against forum rules my bad)

This is definitely something that I am curious about as well, which is why I'm wondering what games people were playing before they got banned. I would suspect something like MK7 or SSB3DS would be top on the list since they're relatively competitive online play. It's all conjecture without further data.

I have been playing SSB with public header these days and no ban. I have a small group on facebook of gateway users (100 members approximately) most of them play with public headers and hasn't reported a single banned. Is very strange the system Nintendo is using to ban.

I dont know about the bans. Haven't experienced it myself. But it makes sense to ban the public headers because they are definitively known. Low hanging fruit. I would be interested if they have found a way to catch those using private headers from a different game they own.

I cant access to online gameplay even using the original game cart. Seems like Nintendo banned the hardware. Because im using the sky3ds too in my console.

Yikes! Guess we can add another victim to the list. Sorry Freddy but thanks for commenting. What game were you playing? And I'm assuming you used a public header since it was Sky3DS right?

Actually, it doesn't seem that complicated to run a check when you go online to see if it is in your purchase history.

Nintendo seems more risk adverse than say, Sony, so they're less likely to ban you simply for having custom firmware or unauthorized software on your device.

They are more likely to ban you if they detect you are going online with a pirated or otherwise unauthorized version of their software.

It seems pokemon is a common issue, did you played with public headers?
I have no ideas what u guys talked bout headers thing lol. Im using sky3ds with latest nintendo firmware.. :D

So ACNL still works? That's really weird you are not banned from everything.

I can still update the data within game, and go to post office to claim my limited prize.

When you keep saying original what do you mean, do you mean you bought them as in their retail cartridges? If so why are you using Sky to play them, unless I'm confused here? Also can you try another game, any that has online functions and see what the error says if any.

Yes i bought them as in their retail cartridges. Also i have few games in my sky3ds flashcart. So yeah i used both things in my 3ds. Seems like the games that i bought via eshop also cant play online. Even the MH4U demo doesnt work for the online multiplayer mode...

It seems rather weird that all games don't work except one, any chance of a picture in game or one which is affected so we can see whats going on, maybe you just need to reset your router or something if one game works?

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.

It inserts a newline in a random spot.
