(See this slots machine? You're not getting it.)

You might remember that Pokémon Platinum version controversially removed the Slots Machine from the game corner, in the European version of the game, replacing it with nothing except the chance to pick up free coins every day.

Well, Official Nintendo Magazine, a UK publication has reported that Heart Gold and Soul Silver will not contain a Slots game either, but instead will have a brand new minigame called Vortorb Flip.

Official Nintendo Magazine said:
Having played the great little mini-game for our exclusive review, we'd describe it as a cross between Picross and Minesweeper. You're presented with a 5x5 grid consisting of 25 squares. Behind each square is either a number or a Voltorb. If you reveal a number that multiplies the number of coins you've earned in that round. So if you get a '1' your coin count stays the same, get a '2' and it doubles, get a '3' and it triples. If you uncover a Voltorb though, you lose all your coins for that round.

You can tell which squares have coins and which have Voltorbs by using the numerical clues at the end of each row and column. Each clue tells you how many Voltorbs are in that row or column, as well as the total number when you add up all the numbers in that row or column. Using a process of elimination, you can figure out which squares have Voltorbs and which have numbers.

I'd also like to add, that this only confirms the change in the European version of the game, whether or not if the american release have Voltorb Flip or not has yet to be confirmed.

I think I prefer this over a random slot machine anyway.

Mine's on pre-order already, first Pokegame since Sapphire.

Pokemon games are usually played more by a younger audience and I agree with the decision to remove the slots minigame. It's good to see they are putting in an effort this time and replacing it with another minigame.

Thumbs up.

why dont they implent both the voltorb thing and the slots .....
Slots promotes slot machines, which in Europe you have to be over 18 to play.

Political correctness gone mad, seriously - cotton wool bound kids.

Actually, this ‘decision’ wasn’t made by the Pokemon team. I heard that PEGI threatened to give Platinum a higher rating if they didn’t remove the slot machine game. Meh.

The game is still in US/Canada, though.

Fuck, why can't these people realize that it isn't real gambling? I played the slots in red/blue a shitload, it doesn't make me feel like going to a casino and wasting all my money.

I played roulette in Dragon Quest 8 a bunch too, doesn't make me want to go out and throw money away.

Tonight on Dateline: Is Pokemon giving our children gambling addictions? More at 11!

Meh, I never bothered with the mini-games in Pokemon, and that includes the Game Corner in the older ones. I just got assloads of money from Indigo Plateau victories and bought all the coinage from the counter. I can live without it if it's EU only.

This is really stupid but PEGI ratings alot of the time are. I mean Soul Bubbles got a 12+ which is a all ages game yet the Ps2 game Altered Beast got the same rating and you run around hacking limbs of monsters with blood all over the place.

How come we get stuck with the shitty slot machine and they get a proper minigame?
North America/ Everyone else who gets this Is Over-protective, retards who can't let there kids explore.

Europe are the ones getting this, not North America (thankfully). A world in which a child can't gamble themselves into as much debt as an adult isn't one I want to live in

What is it with Europe and almost dictatorial degrees of rating stuff? This is as bad as those fugly rating logos companies are forced to print right on the front of DVD/Blu-Ray cases in many European countries. Leave that stuff on the back where it belongs, Europe. Geez.
