US gamestops did this awhile ago. However a second price is listed underneath for used and preorder black cases act as separators between new and used.

"I don't live in Canada, but fuck doing things at Gamestop in Australia because everything that happens in Canada affects me thousands of miles away!"
/sarcasm.

Yeah it sucks for people in Canada, and if I lived in Canada I'd stop buying stuff from Gamestop/EB Games...in stores. I order most of my games online from Gamestop instead of physically going to the store because one, it takes less effort. Two, I hate dealing with stupid/bratty kids who scream for games and their parents don't do shit about it. Three, fuck the employees. "Would you like to get a warranty with that? Got any other games on your mind? What kind of games do you play? TELL ME ABOUT ALL YOUR GAMING HABITS!! TAKE THIS PRE-ORDER LIST, I KNOW I GAVE YOU ONE LAST TIME BUT FUCK YOU HERE'S 12!!!!!" My god. I know they're just doing their job but it's just fuckall annoying to me. Sure Gamestop kinda sucks, but where I live there isn't much of a variety to get used games in stores so I deal with it.

this is for you.

LO FUCKING L

THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I FUCKING MEAN. HOLY SHIT GOD DAMN THIS IRRITATES ME TO THE POINT OF FUCKING CAPS LOCKS.

I even got one of those stupid ass powerup rewards cards SO THEY WOULD STOP ASKING ME TO GET ONE. I EVEN BROUGHT IN LIKE 10 DIFFERENT GAMES SO I COULD GET THE PRO VERSION SO THEY WOULD STOP THAT, TOO. God damn.

Not really surprising considering the shelf space is limited (thus a smaller amount of games on display if a part of the store is separately for used games). Still I don't really appreciate this as a customer.

ps. I'll go check the gamestop near me to see if this has happened also here in Europe..

That sucks for the stupid people that won't or don't pay attention to shit. I stopped going into Gamestop/EB a long time ago to buy games. I still go there for hardware pre-orders and launches and before the shtick even starts I tell them not interested.

Yup this seals it. Not shopping there anymore. Hello Amazon/eBay/WalMart/Mom and Pop store 20 minutes away that will completely resurface a disc for $5.

Yea, when this happens to the US chain, I'll be shopping elsewhere. This is absolutely ridiculous and sleazy.

EDIT: I wonder if this is the product of games companies pushing to get rid of used games.

...Huh? Did you even read it? Gamestop is putting all of their used games on top of the new games, forcing people to look behind them for the new ones. Meaning the copies that Gamestop profits the most from are in front. People who aren't knowledgeable when it comes to buying games (parents, bratty 7 year olds, old people) would suffer the worst from the various Used game issues (such as online passes not being bought, being unable to play online etc). Gamestop is doing this to deliberately trick these people in order to make more of a profit.

From what I read it says that they are eliminating used game sections. Getting rid of all signs that they have used games, and using the same labels as new games. It sounds like to me that they are selling used games as new. Which is what I read. If it's what you're saying, then I guess I'll still be shopping there. All others, buyer beware.

They aren't selling them as new, they are placing them in front of the new games. On every game on the price tag there is a *Used* or *New* below the bar code. They HAVE to put that on every game. They aren't getting rid of all signs of them being used games, they're just getting rid of the sections themselves. If they sold the game as new, they wouldn't be able to obtain the profits as if the game was used. If they did sell them as new, than Gamestop/EB Games would probably see a decline in profits and eventually would hit bankruptcy.

A lot of confusion here.
Some people don't really read the full article and jump to conclusions.
It's already been explained, but this is my take :

Gamestop makes a lot(LOT) of money by selling used games. The profit margin is much higher compared to sell brand new games because obviously they pay much less for a used game copy and whatever profit they make on it is 100% theirs.
By having separate sections in the store, not only do they have less space to display their products, but also used games get less exposition.
In fact, when you go to the counter with a new game, the clerk usually tells you that they have used copy if you are interested, and not because they are good at heart and want you to save, but because they know they make more profit off a used game.
Now with both sections unified there'll be less confusion. If you are looking for a game, you CAN'T miss the used copy, hence they have a higher chance to sell one, without relying on the employers to make that recommendation and push a used copy to you.
It's all corporate decisions. The big sharks up there calling the shots during their meetings, it's their job.
Pretty much every company works the same, they round up on a table and look at the millions they make each year, and try to figure out how to make even more...........greed is the name of the game unfortunately.

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
  • cearp @ cearp:
It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space
