Everyone's familiar with Maxis, the studio behind most Sim titles such as SimCity or The Sims. Well, as of today, after 28 years on the gaming market, Maxis is no more. While the brand itself lives on, the studio is to be consolidated with other EA development studios. This is what an EA representative had to say:
"Today we are consolidating Maxis IP development to our studios in Redwood Shores, Salt Lake City, Helsinki and Melbourne locations as we close our Emeryville location"
An understandable decision after the SimCity fiasco and the underwhelming launch of The Sims 4, but nevertheless, it's always sad to see industry titans such as Maxis go.

It won't be long before EA shuts down itself... They are not only hated by many, they actually can't produce a good game to save their lives lately... They have destroyed all their major franchises. Just have a look at user scores for EA in Metacritic...

The underwhelming Sims 4 launch was due to the fact that it was an extremely gutted version of the Sims that was SO BAD that everyone was able to pick on the expansion crap they pull with every game, which is no doubt EA's doing. They went too far with the Sims 4.

I feel like Maxis cared about making games people could enjoy and EA is interested in selling people as much garbage as possible. EA is the reason Maxis is dead, not just because they pulled the plug, but because of their crap decisions they forced Maxis to make.

The only thing EA saw the Sims for was a golden cash cow, much like anything else they buy out and run into the ground...

RIP Maxis

EA burying a studio in the hopes of making people forget about their horrible decisions as a publisher regarding said studio's games.
I really don't understand how can high profile developers be content with trading a megacorp's paycheck for their reputation+work tarnished, instead of going independent.

It's the temptation of that huge payoff. Going indie doesn't guarantee success. For every Minecraft, there's thousands of failures that no one has ever heard of.
