1) what the latest firmware for it and is it compatible with AceKard 2

2) Is it worth upgrading from a DS Lite (I don't play GBA Games) for the bigger screen and DSiWare.

1) The latest firmware for a DSi to date (14-03-10) is 1.4
An "Acekard 2" WILL NOT WORK with a DSi - what you need is a "Acekard 2i"

You may need to update the firmware of the Acekard 2i to bypass the DSi's 1.4 - but you may be lucky that the company you buy from may offer to upgrade for you

2) If you really want a 'bigger screen' why not go for a "DSi XL" - to date the acekard 2i will work with a DSi XL as well

The screen size difference isn't huge on a DSi. You probably wont notice it. Go for the DSi XL for sure if you want a bigger screen. The thing is huge though, and comes with this fucking 2x4 for a stylus.

I like my DSi, and the camera is really fun to play with. But if you have a perfectly working DSL, not much point going to a normal DSi.
