Gaming DS Phat Firmware? (pictochat color trick)

i heard that some DS phats had a special firmware that lets you change the brightness or something, and if you pulled a cartridge out while in picto chat and got a pink screen that was a special firmware.

now i have several DS Phats, (for electronics projects), and every single one gave a different result after doing the pictochat trick.

one gave a blue screen
one gave a yellow screen
one gave a green screen
one just froze

im not sure what any of that means. are they all different firmwares?

also, whats the deal with Flashme? can i install it from regular slot-1 cart?

i recall that there was a version of the ds phat that allowed you to do something like that. if your ds can do it i think you can only get it to work with the custom firmware, flashme.

if you have a ds flash cart, just run the flashme.nds, it will tell you the version of your ds firmware. if it is v5, you can do the additional steps to flash the ds lite firmware, if not, just exit from the program, no damage done.

but godangit i have 6 Phat's and every single one is V1, V2, V3. i have the worst luck.

the only ds phats that do it was the ones made very late right after the ds lite, they actually used dslite screens in those ds phats that why the brightness trick works.

are you telling me that DS Light Screens are natively compatible with DS Phat?

does this mean i can install a DS Lite Screen into a DS Phat? maybe use a variable resistor to control the brightness. how hard would it be? are the ribbon cables the same?

I am pretty sure they are not exactly. i think the just used similarly parts when building them. thats why replacement parts have them listed separately not not for both.

im hoping its another original GBA deal (screens are interchangeable with a simple mod)

has this even been attempted before? anybody tried tracing the points?
