As has been complained about many times on this forum, the d pad and a, b, x, y buttons are just a bit mushy and the d pad is kind of wobbly compared to both the gba sp and dsi xl, which i own. Is there a way to replace the ds lite buttons with the buttons from these consoles, or are there 3rd party buttons which are more "clicky"?

I am not aware of anything I can say "buy this, spend so many hours pulling things apart to install them". Theoretically it is possible (DS lite is https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/04/Nintendo-DS-Lite-Motherboard-Top.jpg membrane pads rather than tactile dome switches or proper clicky microswitches which make this harder).

Size wise you would also be out of luck as far as adapting things from one of the other consoles, and I am not aware of any low volume services for replacement membrane type switches like you might get a more rigid plastic, wood and metal. Similar I would not want to get someone to make their own (theoretically it is fairly simple).

To that end you are then doing to have to do either a sub board or add microswitches

... almost tempted to do such a thing as a business of sorts. A console modding skunkworks.
