Breakout was the original. Arkanoid was probably one of the best, if not the very best, clone.
This was a huge hit when it came out. Many clones have come along that mimic it, but this was the standard.
I don't know how there can be so many gamers that don't know this classic game.

I liked Breakout, but I find this game to be incredibly boring. Maybe it's just me.
I found Nervous Brickdown (1185) to be a pretty nifty modern update on the theme with snazzy graphics, animation, and lots of variations on the Breakout theme. Purists might not like it though, because it stretches the genre pretty far, but it's very well-done.

Totally agree Bri, just tried it for the first time. When you compare this to Space Invaders Extreme, this almost looks like homebrew. In fact I had restart the game to ensure myself it was saying "Square Enix" at the beginning! Couldn't believe it!
