A portion of a Nintendo Power interview with Dragon Quest creator, Yuji Horii...

Nintendo Power: Do you see any advantages to making Dragon Quest on a home console again?

Yuji Horii: The next Dragon Quest game, Dragon Quest X, will actually be released on Wii. I feel that some users will want to play Dragon Quest on the big screen, which is why we are working toward releasing it on Wii. Of course, in the future we might develop on handhelds again, so it's really a case-by-case basis. It all depends on what the customer wants at that time. Something else we hear is that players want a new Dragon Quest that follows the same system of Dragon Quest VIII, so that's something else we're taking into consideration while in development for a Dragon Quest on Wii.

Nintendo Power: Is development on Dragon Quest X proceeding smoothly?

Yuji Horii: All we can say is that development is going well and we're on the last parts of the game. We can't really share much else at this point, but by the end of this year we should be able to announce something regarding it.[/p]

Fans of the series will be very happy to hear this I think, although the fact that it's in the last stages of development yet will only be ANNOUNCED makes me wonder.

HOLY SHIT YES

I just wonder why they want to limit themselves to the Wii. The PS3 and 360 are much better consoles to develop this on.

DQ always goes on the popular consoles in Japan. NES, SNES, PS1, PS2, DS, and now Wii.

Good to hear it's far along in the design stages, I hope it doesn't have a bunch of gimmick controls just because it's on the Wii. It would be nice to see some combat related controls like sword swings and whatnot, but nothing that feels like it was a tacked on idea. There is plenty of potential for class design and weapon attacks, say when you choose to attack with a Fighter you can do two punching motions and your character will attack. Slashing with a Warrior requires you to move the remote in an angled slash, hitting with a spear requires you to lineup the remote and the nunchuk and thrust forward in a motion, that sort of thing. There is always tons of potential for RPG games to utilize what the controller can do, and combat wise Dragon Quest does not generally have a lot of depth or thought to it so anything that could make the game involving would be excellent.

Are you actually serious? The DQ games are usually 50+ hour RPGs, mostly focused on the battle system instead of complex story. What you describe would wear out in the first 30 minutes of gameplay and just drag the game down for the rest of it.

Have you even played any other DQ besides DQ IX? DQIV through DQ VIII were heavily story driven and all had pretty much the same turn based battle system. As a huge DQ fanboy, I'm happy to hear that DQ X may follow the system of DQ VIII (my favorite game of all time). DQ IX was probably my least favorite in the series. Hopefully we get stuff like casinos and monster recruiting back with DQ X.

I guess what I really meant was that you don't sit there watching cutscenes for like 3 hours. I've always enjoyed DQ more for the battle system for the story, personally, although that might just be.

Regardless of all that, there's still a lot of grinding, which ties into my original point. I've yet to play a DQ where you aren't expected to go out and grind for a while, and if you had to Wiimote-waggle, it would just ruin the whole experience (for me, at least).
