I always give my pokemon a theme.
Since my guy is named Hitler, my main pokemon is Nazi. (and my rival is Jew, but I bet some guessed that already)
Now i'm just naming everything after elements in the periodic table.

Not naming your pokemon looks lame when you go into battle. Unless you name them stupid crap of course, then it'd be better to stick with default.

It feels weird to give my pokemon a "human" name.. naming them with food/adjectives sound stupid.. so no

Rarely. I named Snorlax "Fatass" and Steelix "SolidSnake". Yes, those are lame nicknames.

I only nickname the ones I plan to keep in my party.

Sometimes, when I'm feeling immature, I nickname the Pokemon that I trade to NPCs, for example I caught a Bellsprout and nicknamed it VaginaFace, then traded it for the Onix in Violet City. I also nicknamed the Drowsee, that I traded for Machop, my bitch, it was kind of funny to see "Take good care of my bitch." What can I say, sometimes I'm just feeling silly.
