Do you aply mods/patches to a game before, during or after your first playthrough?

Depends on what I know about the game, and if it's janky or not aged well. FFVI I played on GBA with the restoration patch because I was recommended to play it that way, Fallout 2 I knew had its own restoration patch I used--usually the patches the community creates offer a way better way to experience classic games, so why not make the most of it on the first go round?

I play without until I get to the point that I cannot beat the game because its too difficult or I'm just incapable. At that point I begin looking for cheats that make it easier or me more effective but not cheats that make it way to easy to win. I don't mind a challenge, but once I'm at a week... I'm over it. Move on.
