Verbatim sold out to CMC.

If you do some research, Verbatim, along with the longest, and best quality discs, Taiyo-Yudenb sold their division out to them.

Now made in Taiwan. Not saying it's bad or anything, but questions appear when the consumer market dies.

And by the way, I've burned on cheap Memorex DVD-Rs, and didn't have many problems - aside from an improper disc drive.
Everyone sold out to CMC . But CMC Pro are the best. All verbatims now are fake. CMC Pro still kept on a lot of the Taiyo Yuden people and the whole manufacturing process for those discs. Fake verbatim doesn't.

All i wanted was playing my Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 Backup on my PS2 SCPH-50004 and here I am one week later testing 5 different drives and CD Manufacturers. And I havent even possessed or ever needed a CD Drive for at least 15 Years. I remember being 11 years old argueing with a friend that Memorex and Platinum were the best bang for the buck in like 2001. After that puberty hit and I got lost in countless parties, so here I am again.
So first drive im testing is TSSTCorp SSH224 which generally seems to be higher quality. I havent bought the recommend CDs yet but Ill try the different CDs that my neighbour gave me for free first.

First CDs are Sony, Verbatim and Tevion (Cheapest Discounter Product). Funny thing is Atip Info of Verbatim and Tevion are exactly to the point the same, but dont know if that is enough to indicate those being the same rebranded discs:

Same TSST burning Sony CD-R at 16x Speed with Alcohol with PS1 Preset:

I burned another Tevion at 16x which produced similar higher C1 Error Rate similar to Sony

Now despite the relatively low C1 Error Rate they all have skipping Audio in THPS2 on the PS2, so it doesnt say much.
Also it seems that some programs may produce better outputs than others, but I need to test this further. Burning with a Sony AW-Q160S drive with this Sony CD-R produced less skipping Audio with Cdrdao than with Alcohol.

Unfortunatley I can only get some drives working with Cdrdao, the TSST and the Asus DRW-24F1ST give me "Error Writing Failed" does anyone has a solution to that Cdrdao Problem?

So with all of the drives and CD-Rs skipping, the C1 Error Rate doesnt seem to be a good indicator for a working PS game with regular CD-Rs.
So I need to test better CD-Rs with all the drives for better assessment.

CD-R's with the Moser Baer ATIP are a no-go for older PS1's. I have plenty of them and they are bad, no matter with which burner I burn them. Even older discmans and car stereos don't read them.

I tried some more combinations of burners and CDs, unfortunately they all produce faulty audio with PAL Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 on my PS2 SCPH-50004.
At this point I start believing it has nothing to do with my Burners or CD Type, can anyone try with a previously working setup to produce a properly working backup of the PAL Version? Go to Single Skate Session choose Tony Hawk in Hangar for a full ride after like 1-2 min the Music is occasionally skipping.

This time I tried the Pioneer DVR-106DB and TCCT SH-222 which should be decent burners. I used regular TDK and Verbatim CD-Rs and Alcohol 120% in PS Preset

Verbatim Atip can be seen in last post
TDK Atip:

It cant be that complicated people everywhere claim they burn working Backups with regular burners and Verbatims. Maybe its related to software settings or its game specific.

I burned a copy of Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 PAL on a Sony CD-R (with Sony ATIP) using a Pioneer DVR-MCC at 4x. The software was ImgBurn running on a Pentium 4 PC with Windows XP.

The game music doesn't stutter on my PS2 SCPH-50004, I left it running for 2 minutes at the point you mention. I also tried this on my worst PS1, a SCPH-5552 with a worn laser, and the music doesn't stutter.

Running on the SCPH-50004 PS2:

Running on the SCPH-5552 PS1:

I didn't play the level very well because I never played this game and the fast camera moving gave me motion sickness. But I did move the character around, 2 minutes on the level, until the time run out.

You're in Germany? I can send you this CD-R copy if you want to test it on your console.

Thanks to your effort I finally could find the issue the 4x backups with TDK and Verbatims are working fine now on my other SCPH-50004 console. I just received that console recently and have not opened it yet, could be a problematic modchip, incompatibility with mechapwn or dying laser. Both are SCPH-50004 V9.

Error looked like this
Example Skipping Audio

Even the Backups from Sony AW-Q160S and Asus DRW-24F1ST with cheapest Tevion CD-R are now working correctly on the other console.

Maybe the laser is heavily worn. In my experience the PS2 phat units are a lot less picky than PS1's. Most backups that stutters heavily on PS1's, play fine on those PS2's. Even some Moser Baer CD-R's.

I used this one IIRC

Worked on Linux. I had a different one that did not work on Linux before.

Today I found this box of old Philips Silver Premium 650MB CD-R's for €4,99 in a thrift store far from home. The package says they are made in Japan.

According to this page (https://www.cdmediaworld.com/hardware/cdrom/philips.shtml) those can be Taiyo Yuden CD-R's. But I'm not sure because all 10 discs are still sealed.

All right, here is what I tested.
I atempted to burn the game Resident Evil Survivor (PAL).
I was aslo using an adaptor in order to connect the IDE burner.

- Burn with Plextor PX-891SAF (Sata) on 80min CMC Pro Taiyo Yuden disc (Best result)
- Burn with Plextor PX-760A (IDE) on 80min CMC Pro Taiyo Yuden disc (Second best result)
- Burn with Plextor PX-760A (IDE) on 80min CMC Pro Taiyo Yuden disc with PSX 80 Minute Patcher
- Burn with Plextor PX-760A (IDE) on 74min That's CDR-A74CP Taiyo Yuden disc (Worst result)

I was expected totaly the reverse order.
For the best result I got, there is no voice, and loading are very very very slow.
I got errors when verifying after burning with the PSX 80 Minute Patcher.
The 74min cd never started (stay on a black screen).

So, what I did wrong ?
Is there beter settings ?

Was burn speed slow? Might need to relubricate the PSX drive. Also I’m not familiar with the plextor model, not all of them are high quality burners.

80 minute patcher is gonna add errors to the end of the disc due to how it works but they can be ignored.

The burn speed was set to the minimum (x4 for PX-760A, x8 for PX-891SAF), the PX-760A is in your list in your ultimate guide as excelent.

You have a tuto/guide to how to lubricate the psx drive ?

Actualy, the most surprising is that I got a better result with a modern Sata burner !?!?

Newer plextors are not the same quality as old ones, especially SATA ones.
Anything that came after PX-760A and above are rebadged drives. For example: PX-891SAF is a Lite-On iHAS. They stopped producing professional drives that they manufactured independently sometime maybe 2006(?).
That's why I don't understand why I got a better result with the sata burner than the PX-760A.

Hello, sorry if i'm new, i just joined gbatemp so i can tell you about a problem, I've been having problems with my Lite-On HAS124B every time i try to use the generic-mmc-raw driver to burn a PS1 game with cdrdao, for some reason the normal generic-mmc driver seems to work fine, but if i use the generic-mmc-raw driver i get these errors, i supplied a screenshot and a full log
