shit, i installed this thinking i could play dvds on genesis plus. will a update cause bricks, is there away to uninstall it. help!

An unmodded wii cannot read a DVD-R and this has nothing to do with it. Period.

A modded wii can read DVD-Rs but IOS restricts you to game format DVDs (signed and encrypted). The UnencryptedRead patch disables this restriction, which means that you can read standard format DVDs and DVD-Rs (movies, normal ISO9660 filesystems, etc). If you have a modchip.

There has to be some software intervention somewhere along the line... these games aren't exactly streamed sequentially, like movies.

That was just Marcan's short explanation, I suppose. He just didn't mention the small amount of low level disc reading you could do before the IOS patch. He considered it no functionality, I suppose.

But the other part is right. Unmodded Wiis cannot read Non-GOD/Wii-Format discs, and this IOS patch has nothing to do with it.
DVD-R isn't even the correct term. Any DVD-ROM with the normal sector layout is unreadable. Try it.
