Croc is the next 90s mascot platformer to get a remaster

Croc_Legend_of_the_Gobbos.jpg

The classic 1990s game Croc: The Legend of Gobbos is getting a remaster. Joining the likes of Spyro, Crash, and Banjo & Kazooie, Croc will be seeing an upgraded remaster at some point. Former lead of Argonaut and series creator Jez San said that while it's very early on to announce, "Croc HD" has begun development. Croc, while it never had much staying power, the original game sold over 3 million copies, performing on-par with other beloved games back in the day.

I remember that I played 3 stages, but it was very fun to solve the puzzle to get more items. But I hope they fix de 90s 3D camera problem, or at least make it have some button to tilt a little

Well, cool, more games like these should get the remastermake treatment, games that were alright, but with a bit more polish, could've been even better.

Now, while my suggestion doesn't maybe really need it... Tombi/Tomba next? :V

The soundtrack was good, but I never could get past the controls. I played Mario 64 first and Croc's controls are so bad in comparison. I originally played it on PSEmuPro at like 5fps, and it actually played better that way... I went back and played it on RetroArch recently and even rewind doesn't save it.

I'll definitely be picking up the remake if they fix the controls.

Loved the original on my Saturn and have been replaying the PSX version on handhelds now and then.
The controls could be fixed up in a remake but I hope they don't change too much to keep some difficulty with the platforms.
Would be a shame not to have that flip he does in the first game.
Wouldn't mind more stages either.
The sequel would also be nice for a remake and I'd hope this could lead to a third to make it a trilogy.

Been hoping to see something with Croc for a long time like a GoG release but this will do just fine.

Dafaq is this load of Croc?

Where's my Ratchet & Clank remastered trilogy? Like how bloody-ass Spyro got Reignited, and fuck-difficult Crash became N-Sane (and a more faithful fourth game too, and a remastered racing game - which had monetisation added post-release)? Gimme R&C already Sony/Insomniac!

I liked Croc but I don't think it's remaster worthy (on the level of Spyro or Crash) ...

btw, WHEN THE HELL did they announce/make an official Banjo & Kazooie Remaster???

Croc was the first game I ever owned on the PC, it got pretty difficult from what I remember. However my 3D gaming experience was lacking as a kid back then!

I seem to remember the original release I had never supported Direct X so it wasn't possible to play it once upgrading our PC's GPU, however their looks to be a Direct X patch, so might be a good excuse to re visit the game.

Wait until we hear about the Jaz Jackrabbit remake a few months from now :P

I'd buy it!

Someone has reimplemented JJ2 so you can play it on various platforms including your web browser: http://deat.tk/jazz2/wasm/

Android and Xbox (UWP) are also supported: https://github.com/deathkiller/jazz2

Why are people asking for remasters of games not made by Argonaut?
Are they ill informed?

It deserves it and I think it's much needed. IIRC the original didn't have analog stick support on PC, and the game (as well as its sequel) uses tank controls, which needless to say do not work very well for a platformer.
So, there is a lot a remaster could do to improve upon the original.
I love the original, but I never actually beat it, though I got quite far. Could never get used to the controls and I guess at some point they just made it too frustrating to play the game. It was slow and clunky. I hope the remaster will offer a more traditional control scheme, at least as an option. Even if it makes the game easier, a game's difficulty shouldn't be due to bad controls.

Apparently there is a fan made remaster already that fixes some things such as analog support, and adds support for higher resolutions. Not sure how I missed that. Let's see if they can do a better job with the official remaster than fans already did.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

It does that when I edit a post.

  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea

  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
