HI. I have an xbox one wireless controller I want to connect to my PC and use for games. Do i need the official xbox one wireless controller usb adapter, or how do i connect it without having to configure all buttons and stuff. Thanks!

What?

Just turn the Bluetooth on your PC and pair a new device, choose "Others" or "Everything else" if "Game Controllers" is not an option.

Whatcha mean by:
without having to configure all buttons and stuff.

Yeah but that doesn't work. @JuanMena

Apparently i do need the Windows USB Dongle by Microsoft. Using straight BT is not going to work properly even if controller does pair up.

That depends on whether your Xbox One controller has Bluetooth. Earlier models don't have Bluetooth, rather relying on a proprietary wireless protocol and thus requiring an adapter.

A later revision of the controller added Bluetooth and so you just need your PC to have Bluetooth functionality, and you pair it normally like JuanMen described above.

Just for reference, earlier models look like this:

Whereas the revision with Bluetooth looks like this:

The differences can be subtle when looking at the black controller, but I chose these photos since it's also the most common color in my experience. Most of all, notice that the earlier model has a different texture in the part containing the home button and the bumpers (it's glossy), which is also more clearly separate. In white controllers this part is black. Comparison between white controllers (older vs. newer):

Images come from this wiki page, which I recommend for further detail on the revisions.
