Concept footage for Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) shows a very different looking Sonic

An artist who worked on pre-visualisation concept shots for the Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) movie has uploaded footage to his Vimeo channel that shows a bizarre gremlin-like, placeholder Sonic.

Ellery Ortiz, a pre-visualization artist who works for Digital Domain created the proof of concept footage using early placeholder assets and models to visualise how the scenes would play out in motion. These concept shots are then evaluated by the animators and directors before being filmed and then used by the animators to create the final animation seen in the movie.

Ellery Ortiz said:
Working from storyboards, I created animation and defined timing of action in the shots. Sweetened with FX and Lighting elements. Defined camera composition and lens choices for the purposes of storytelling.

The Sonic model used in the shot looks unlike any other version seen, even the one shown in the infamous 2019 trailer.

What do you think of the evolution of Sonic's movie design?

I wasn't expecting to see full 3D rendered scenes. Must have been a lot of work putting that together as rough mockups from the storyboards and then film it and render sonic over the filmed sequences.

It is quite good quality work for a rough draft.

I'm not sure I'd say they count as "full 3D rendered scenes".

Don't they throw scripts into unreal for pre-viz? I assume anyone working in this field day in and day out will need to be quick at knocking this type of thing together anyway, or nothing would ever get released.

Indeed they do. I was expecting something without background (or placeholder polygons), instead of a fully realized crude scene. Even the human characters are animated, which didn't happen a few years ago.

They really are advancing this stuff.

From what I’ve read online (which is always 100% accurate and could never be false info), ugly Tails never existed, and that post credits scene came about as an attempt to try and “win back” the audience along with the redesign
Damn... If that's true, then that stinks.

It's probably mostly stock textures, models and npc's.

PS2? I'd say this is some Tekken 1-tier stuff, lol

I was going to say ps1 at first, but thought I would be more fair, those are cutscenes actual PS1 graphics are much more blocky, I would say this footage is actually realistically PS2 standard, maybe a little better than PS2 or at least late PS2 standard, but they are after all just designed to show how a scene will playout before filming and designing scenes properly so they don't waste time doing a high detail model then finding out the scene looked crap

I kinda forgot that probably not many people here are that familiar how previs are in the work pipeline and dont always look as amazing as the marvels previs.

Well, I took these pics from the deleted scenes part of the first movie (bought from iTunes). So I think they're just models to the final product

i thought everybody knew cocktails are like 75% ice
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Yeah but not like this.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's not like they're complaining that their Slurpee is 99% ice or something, but if the cocktail calls for "shot of vodka, shot of vermouth, shot of gin, shot of Campari, three shots of juice, squirt of lemon" and ends up being a thimbleful of booze, that's a problem.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
the funny thing is cocktails in norway are only allowed to have 1 20ml shot of booze
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    so..... yeah
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
we're used to only having a thimbleful of booze

    Booo.

same thing if you want whisky on the rocks or something, you can't get a double
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but you could buy as many shots of whisky (or anything else) as you want and ask for a glass of ice and pour them in
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    it's dumb

    Maybe.

There was a comparison of the number of Ibuprofen poisonings before and after they limited the maximum dosage per box or per pill (i'll look that up). No limit on the number of boxes you can still buy as many as you want, so people argued it was pointless.
  • Veho @ Veho:
But the number of (accidental) poisonings dropped because drinking an entire package of ibuprofen pills went from "I need a new liver" to "I need a new box of Ibuprofen".
  • Veho @ Veho:
Here we have ketoprofen that used to be prescription-only because of the risk of toxic dosages, but then they halved the dose per pill and sell them in bottles of six pills apiece instead of twenty and it doesn't need a prescription any more. Yes you can buy more than one bottle but people simply don't.

Usually accidentally overdose of ibuprofen here is from people taking like cold medicine then ibuprofen for a headache and the combination is over what they need
