Chrono Trigger, one of the most highly rated SNES RPGs to date, is now available on PC! Steam reviews aren't looking good.
So basically they just took the mobile version and selectively slapped a HQ4x filter on some of the graphics and called it a day.
How is that any better than what I can already do with an emulator?
I don't think it deserves all the bad reviews though, it might not be as good as people hoped but it's still the same great game. Though I haven't played the mobile version, I don't see anything horrendously bad in the screenshots or trailer on the Steam page that would justify over 75% bad reviews, and if you want to legally acquire and play this game and don't fancy touch controls on mobile, it seems like a pretty decent way to get the game. The SNES original is sure to cost a lot more online.
I think if they provide an option to turn off the filtering and fix some of the little issues (mainly UI issues) that'll be enough to make fans happy. They seem to want the original experience unaltered, and this is ALMOST giving it to them, but not quite.

I personally like HQ4x (but not as much as I like xBRZ), but it's certainly not for everyone.
I do have to say though that calling it "updated graphics" is a joke. All they did was apply a filter to it, and you can tell they didn't bother to upscale them by hand or even touch up the graphics afterwards to get rid of the filtering artifacts. Couldn't tell any difference in the sound, they probably just applied some very subtle filters to it.

The music is 100% the Snes version, about the only saving grace. But the other issues:

- Touch controls (on a desktop/PC game, really?)
- Bad UI
- Horrible filtering to where you can see the seams in the tiles
- Framerate issues

Why they picked this version is beyond me.

Framerate issues on a game this old that has had almost no changes made to it is odd. But hopefully it's something that can be fixed easily. The other things are certainly an easy fix.

If they can have a toggle for the GUI and filter, I may consider getting it.

I have the original snes cartridge as well as the one that came out for Playstation. I think the playstation one was Chrono and One of the Final Fantasys together. Chrono Cross was actually pretty cool. For some reason I still want this PC version though. Then again maybe I better wait it out and see how it actually is before I jump in.

Especially since the DS version works in nds-bootstrap as of 0.7.2 though you still have to apply the AP patch.

The DS version is the "definitive" version if anything...

I was confused by his "nds-bootstrap as of 0.7.2 though you still have to apply the AP patch" part is all. Only Square Enix can be a master of butchering games. I'd rather get the APK for free just to piss them off.

So many SJW white knights on Steam defending this steaming pile of shite.
Why would SJWs be defending this? What does this have to do with societal politics? Did Square make all the characters transgendered minorities or something, and everyone that dislikes this is just a transphobic racist? Help me out here, because I'm not getting why SJWs would be defending this.

*Shrug* Either way, there are people defending this game ad nauseum on Steam, even to the point of attacking people who don't agree with them that the port is bad. It's like they're doing it on purpose.

I feel that you can rest easy knowing that the people defending this never knew what an SNES was until they saw some Let's Play.

If I had to pick between all releases, I'd go with DS first, and SNES second. At least the SNES version can be played on emulators on PC and consoles. Even better is some emulators can use Retro Achievements, like RetroArch. Better yet, RA has more achievements for Chrono Trigger than Steam.
This!
My latest playthrough of this gem which I consider the best SNES game ever was on Wii U with RetroArch (SNES rom).
I played it on TV when I was alone and on the GamePad when my girlfriend was about to use the TV for herself.
Now that I'm through it I'll carry the savegame over to my Switch to start the New game+ there once RetroArch runs super stable and with all glory and guess what? I can't wait for that to happen and I'll be much happier with that than anyone who bought this horrific port on Steam.
