CD Projekt Red apologizes for Cyberpunk's poor performance and reveals plans for the game's future

Despite having already been released, Cyberpunk 2077 is still seeing more delays. In a statement, both as a video with CD Projekt co-founder Marcin Iwiński and as a text Q&A, released on their website today, developer CD Projekt Red addressed the technical issues that has plagued the game since launch and laid out their plans for how to handle things in the future. A large patch will be coming in the next ten days, with another large patch to follow "in the weeks after," along with more regular updates and improvements. The studio had originally planned to release free DLC in early 2021, but have shifted their priority to fixing bugs, so those DLCs have been delayed and will be released afterwards. More details on the DLCs can be expected in the following months. Similarly, the next-gen updates for Xbox Series X|S and Playstation 5 have also been delayed to the second half of 2021, originally slated for release in Q1 2021.

Also in the statement are details on the technical issues that led to the game's poor performance and multiple delays. He explains that Cyberpunk 2077 featured a multitude of custom objects and interacting systems, and having the game take place in a large city, in a "relatively loading-free environment," taxed older consoles' "streaming" systems. "Streaming is responsible for 'feeding' the engine with what you see on screen, as well as the game mechanics," reads the statement. "Since the city is so packed and the disk bandwidth of old-gen consoles is what it is, this is something that constantly challenged us." It also explains that they prioritized graphical fidelity on the PC version and then tried to adjust it for consoles, which caused more issues.

While the Q&A is more or less a transcript of the video for the most part, there are a few points in the Q&A not mentioned in the video. Namely, on the topic of crunch, CD Projekt claims that avoiding crunch will be a top priority for them in the future. This language is notably less definitive than their previous promises to stop crunch altogether, which they were not able to keep during Cyberpunk 2077's development. They also re-affirm that they are continuing the refund program, and that they are still working to get the game back on the Playstation Store.

They really should have written out a longer term plan beyond 2022. If they think they can fix most of this game by 2022, they are lying to themselves, as well as the people who have bought and want to buy this game. They need to fix bugs and glitches. They need to basically re-write the driving, police, crowd, and enemy AI's to be anything but the most basic possible level that is acceptable. They need to implement most of the latent content that is present in the game but was either commented out or unfinished. Getting the game to where it should be vs. where it is now is going to take a "No Man's Sky" level of effort, literally years stacked on years. If they don't do this, they will have literally cheated people.

I think they can actually fix most of the bugs/issues within a year's time, but only if they aren't splitting focus on DLC and the next-gen upgrade. Something's gonna have to be put on the backburner, if not multiple things.

I'm currently playing the game on PC (2080 / 1440p screen, it runs well, it's pretty) and the game in itself is quite good. It will definitely have a good life when it's ready and there's a big user base on the next ben consoles.

The native PS5 and XBOX Series versions of Cyberpunk get a rather late release next year.
Edit: Why not announce a Switch port for 2023 while they are at it?

Would be funny if they put a cloud version on the Switch right now that would likely run better than the native PS4 and Xbone versions. Hell, the Stadia version runs considerably better than the PS4 and Xbone versions, sad state of affairs when that's the case.

... I especially enjoy the part of that yellow Timeline where it says "Free Next-Gen Console Update", because obviously that has to be stated to keep people from paying for it.

Much like I need to add in that this is a Free Comment.
Please, no need to pay me.

I'm not normally one to complain much but that is one shitty, vague roadmap. And no next gen versions until late this year? I'm glad I refunded the game.

This further cements the idea that paying full price and pre-ordering games is for suckers or those with cash to burn. This game will be a fraction of the price once the "complete" version is released.

These statements are contradictory, no? The reason people are so comfortable pre-ordering these days is that they can always refund the game if it doesn't live up to expectations. At least, that's standard on a number of platforms now.

I just hope that more companies learn from this mistake. CD Project was under pressure but keep on delaying the release so imagine delaying 3 times and then the game is still a shit show that only makes you look bad. You can't rush a masterpiece if you do it is going to cost you more fixing the problems versus doing it right the first time.

i thought everybody knew cocktails are like 75% ice
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Yeah but not like this.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's not like they're complaining that their Slurpee is 99% ice or something, but if the cocktail calls for "shot of vodka, shot of vermouth, shot of gin, shot of Campari, three shots of juice, squirt of lemon" and ends up being a thimbleful of booze, that's a problem.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
the funny thing is cocktails in norway are only allowed to have 1 20ml shot of booze
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    so..... yeah

same thing if you want whisky on the rocks or something, you can't get a double
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but you could buy as many shots of whisky (or anything else) as you want and ask for a glass of ice and pour them in

    it's dumb

    Maybe.

There was a comparison of the number of Ibuprofen poisonings before and after they limited the maximum dosage per box or per pill (i'll look that up). No limit on the number of boxes you can still buy as many as you want, so people argued it was pointless.
  • Veho @ Veho:
But the number of (accidental) poisonings dropped because drinking an entire package of ibuprofen pills went from "I need a new liver" to "I need a new box of Ibuprofen".
  • Veho @ Veho:
Here we have ketoprofen that used to be prescription-only because of the risk of toxic dosages, but then they halved the dose per pill and sell them in bottles of six pills apiece instead of twenty and it doesn't need a prescription any more. Yes you can buy more than one bottle but people simply don't.

Usually accidentally overdose of ibuprofen here is from people taking like cold medicine then ibuprofen for a headache and the combination is over what they need
