Hacking Can I update firmware

I have a card that says on the box R4ii sdhc Upgrade and it is for version 1.4.1. My DSi is on version 1.4.3 and I would like to know if the card can be updated to work on 1.4.3. I haven't had a card for a few years and now I'm reading about cards needing to be recordable and having a firmware writer included with them but I have no idea what these mean. I've searched around and can't find a straight answer to my question and I'm running out of time as I'm trying to find out before I buy one for my daughters birthday on Saturday.
