Yes you can, that's the method I used to run GC backups on my Wii.

The best method to date I think is still using a Wii to rip GameCube discs to USB or SD.

Nintendo discs are slightly non standard. Gamecube and Wii use a DVD derivative. (while universal in layman's terms, their actual name isn't "DVD")
Most of the time other drives won't read them. There's exceptions, but I'm unfamiliar with it.
