Los AngelesMinors in the state of California will no longer be allowed to use tanning beds after Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill on Sunday prohibiting anyone under the age of 18 from using ultraviolet tanning devices.California is the first state in the nation to ban minors from using tanning beds, legislators said.
Previously, California had banned minors under the age of 14 from using tanning beds, but allowed those between 14 and 18 years of age to use tanning beds with parental consent.

The bill was part of a cluster of legislation signed on Sunday designed to "improve the health and well-being of Calfornians," according to a statement from the Governor's office.

"I praise Gov. Brown for his courage in taking this much-needed step to protect some of California's most vulnerable residents — our kids — from what the 'House of Medicine' has conclusively shown is lethally dangerous: ultraviolet-emitting radiation from tanning beds," the bill's sponsor, state Senator Ted Lieu, said in a statement.

"If everyone knew the true dangers of tanning beds, they'd be shocked. Skin cancer is a rising epidemic and the leading cause of cancer death for women between 25 and 29."

The law will go into effect on January 1, 2012, according to Lieu's office..

I've had a problem with tanning beds for ages for the obvious reasons that minors are not being allowed to use them anymore. They cause skin cancer at an abnormal rate, and some actually become addicted to tanning. They go upwards of 20 or 30 times a month, which is insane on so many levels. To make things worse, many girls that tan don't seem to be aware of the increased risk they are at. How can a more attractive skintone (to a certain extent) be worth potentially dying, or having hideous scars on your body that leave you embarassed? It's like how smokers understand the risks, but they just can't resist.

Glad to see at least one state taking the necessary steps. I would hope that more states begin to take similar action. I would hate to see some incredibly pretty girls (being the majority of those that tan from everything I see), or anybody for that matter, that I know fall prey to skin cancer.

So, that have to be adults to get self appose cancer? I see...

The further problems sit in the market. Although there are legitimate health safety concerns regarding tanning beds, the only way to further take action would be a full ban. The issues there remain numerous though. The number of tanning salons, people who own tanning beds, and the like is too much. It is too hard to control. Requiring ID though is something simple, but how many tanning salons will truly make the effort to uphold the law?

Not that there needs to be more evidence of my detachment from the world but a tan is a prerequisite should one desire to be considered hot now? Often I can fail to contain the hum of Oompa Loompa but that I guess is a different matter.

Anyhow barring the usual dislike of the "ban it" mentality that seems to be so pervasive among many governments (although this looks to have been a considered thing rather than reactionary) and others these days and perhaps thoughts of dislike towards those that would reduce the effectiveness of natural selection (I am told people are waiting to have children and if this is in the 25 to 29 range) I have no objections.

Completely agree,
Although I'm pretty sure this law will increase the effectiveness of natural selection.

-Stay tuned for the teenage daughter who tried to microwave herself.

I didn't realize that the use of tanning beds was so out of control that it warranted a law.

Oh no?

I don't see the appeal of tanning beds in general, so this doesn't sound like a big deal. If kids want to be tan, they'll just have to suck it up and go into the sunlight.

That's terrible, just terrible. If people want to give themselves skin cancer they should be allowed to do so. However if one should get skin cancer from said tanning bed their medical insurance should NOT be liable to pay for it. That is like saying let me get drunk and wreck my car and the insurance should pay for it. If people want to be stupid let them be stupid on their own dime!

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?

  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
