I have a DSi XL and I am very pleased with it. Games look pretty good on it, not actually watched a video on it however I think I will be putting a video on SD card later and see what it's like on the bigger screens. The only bad thing about the DSi XL is that it's uncomfortable to hold at times, when I'm lying in bed and playing a game it is difficult to hold the console in 1 hand so I usually have to lay on my front and have it sat on the mattress, not really a big issue.
If you are worried about the firmware ask for a pre september console, I'm sure they will have 1 or 2 somewhere in the stock room. I'll be updating my DSi XL tomorrow once I have updated my AK2i.
