I have a non XL o3ds. So I was trying to do something I had done at least 10 times before (format emuNAND via Gateway launcher.dat) so it was working as expected until suddenly it stopped and shut down my 3ds. I tried to turn it back on but alas, I got nothing but a pitch black screen. The blue LED turned on but not even recovery mode would start. So I'm assuming I need to do a hardware mod, but I don't know what I'm actually supposed to be doing. I see stuff like: https://gbatemp.net/attachments/vrije-opmerking_20140126_123816_01-jpg.6106/ but I don't have a clue what that actually means and what I'm supposed to do with the other side of the wires or how I'm supposed to connect that to my Pi2. I have an RPi2 as well as a soldering kit, NAND backups and another o3ds on 4.5. Any help/links to tutorials on what I should do?

It should show a blue screen with an error code if it's bricked.
Try removing sdcard and turn it on. Maybe even open it up and pull the battery.

you won't need a raspberry pi to unbrick that's only for blue screen bricks (and i dont think the pi2 would work anyway, even the b+ wasnt compatible with the unbrick software)

anyways if your lucky you may have the rev2 motherboard which has a much easier CLK point, but you will need a nand backup.....and if you dont feel like risking doing it yourself you culd drop @hundshamer a PM

Well, that sucks, those points are far to small for me to solder with the kit I have.

If you don't think you will be able to do it yourself, I recommend @hundshamer. They were very helpful and fast setting up a nand mod for my o3dsxl. Just a tip when you restore your nand backup, if you are using a laptop with a built in sd card reader, it might not work. I had to buy a usb sd card reader, and this allowed me to backup my nand. Good luck getting your 3DS unbricked!

So..... Did the gateway "create emuNAND" option bricked his 3DS or it was just an unfortunate coincidence that his 3DS gave up while he was creating an emuNAND?

I think the former but I don't fully know, I had my 3DS charging, started 'format emunand' and left the room, when I came back to check the progress, it was halfway done, came back later and my 3DS was off and I couldn't turn it back on.

I'm asking because it seems in a programming standpoint, the first incident seems unlikely, if not impossible, as NAND reading in theory should not alter the NAND in anyway, and since NAND modification is the easiest way to brick a 3DS, it is a very suprising info if it's proven true.....

If the 3DS we're being downgraded when that happened though, that would be another story......

Yeah, it was weird, really don't want to pay the $30 in shipping to send it to @hundshamer but just might if I don't get help on http://gbatemp.net/threads/nand-from-other-3ds-into-emunand.391508/#post-5548789
