Trump threatens to withdraw us* from NATO. It very well could be the end of times under his leadership.
I don't think that would be an "end of times" situation, but a "worsened times" situations that could be revertible, with consequences though, but not "end of times".

And well, even if I don't think it is the way to go, I guess in a democracy if a majority would like to withdraw from NATO then that is the democratic decision, even if I don't agree with it.

one issue is the way our democracy functions is weird, and Trump may "win" despite losing the popular vote

In 2016 he lost the popular vote for instance

It's not totally fair to say someone who didn't win the most votes was democratically elected - and that it's the will of the people to pull out of NATO - IMHO that should require a supermajority in congress or something similar for such an impactful decision

It's a fair point. When has a US President made an announcement of such import by tweet? Yeah, modern times or whatever, but this should have been a live TV address.

in my view this is part of the reason totalitarian regimes are rising in power

china has consistent policy in one direction that doesn't change with the wind - as such they are able to slowly build towards a singular vision

modern western democracies spend every other 4-8 years undoing all of their previous policies, and enacting self serving agendas to benefit them and their constituents at the expense of the country as a while

If this keeps up, china will overtake us and democracy may die out in the world

"When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic." -- Ben Franklin
There is an humorist in Quebec who made a sketch about him being against democracy. He listed a couple of reasons and, tbh, they are all valid point.
Like, what is the basis of democracy? At the beginning, it was meant to give the power to the people. However, what is it in practice? You vote for the person who will screw you for the next 4 years. That's the only power you have and you only get in once every 4 years, you have no power in the mean time.

Another point he raised was, for a lot of people "Democracy = freedom", if there is no democracy, then it is surely a dictature. But, just look at China, Russia, or the Nazi Germany, I'm pretty sure there are a few human rights that were broken right there.
(He made a joke about the majority oppressing the minority : "There is 4 men in a car, 3 of them want to go to strippers, 1 of them wants to go to the museum."

Another point, those who say that democracy may not be perfect, but it's the best system we have. Well, we never really tried another system, right? Like he said, instead of giving the job to the person who has the most vote, how about giving the job to the most competent person like we do with any jobs.
Like, what if we do that for surgeons? You go to the hospital for your heart surgery, you meet the doctor, you ask him how many time has he done the procedure, and he answers "I never done that before, I'm actually a trucker, but when there were elections for being heart surgeon, I decided to run for it. I made some promises, said that I would save tons of life, and they believed me :rofl2: ... So for the next 4 years, I'm a surgeon, and if they are not happy, they just don't have to vote for me in 4 years, hehehe... So, you said you had a problem with your heart?"

He gave tons of example like that, and I totally understand each of them.

we have as humans tried other systems

democracy tends to end up with the least human rights abuses, although that's not guaranteed

china has a system similar to what you're talking about, where by in large people are promoted due to their ability to govern - the single party state has some nepotism of course, but a lot of people are promoted for their ability to get shit done

the unfortunate reality tho is when not beholden to the people these systems of government lose all humanity and treat people like resources - which is what ends in oppression

... consistently asked all of my friends and family not to vote for him - AND - even don't speak to my brother anymore over a lot of disagreements regarding Trump
I never talk politics with my family members, and they never talk politics with me. Life is too short to ruin your relationships with other family members for such a trivial reason. You should just tell your bro "Let's just agree to disagree" and leave it like that.
The vote of someone REALLY stupid has as much value as the vote of someone who read newspapers and who is well informed.
But consider the implications of not letting the idiots vote. They would be second class citizens. I wouldn't want that to happen. At least, they are somewhat responsible citizens who do vote. Last municipal election in Montreal, I voted, knowing full well that the vast majority of registered voters wouldn't bother to vote. I figured my vote would therefore weigh a lot more than it should, and it did. Valérie Plante was elected, as I wished.

Well, let's be honnest, on an everyday life basis, there is surely no oppression, but when it comes to "get shits done", is it really better in america, in canada or in Europe, than it is in other parts of the country?

we still talk sometimes, but he injects it into everything he can't stop

we spoke on the phone yesterday because he was venting about my mom, and as it was ending he just dove head first into trumpism

I try not to argue, but sometimes he says some pretty objectionable things and it's hard to let it slide - especially when I have a multicultural/multiracial family and I know he is hurting other people who don't want to speak up

Last Canadian election was the most useless in history (over 338 seats, less than 10 had changed)

January 6th was not "symbolic." They fully intended to use those gallows if they had gotten their hands on Pence or any of the Democratic members of Congress.

It was literally incapable of serving as an actual gallows. Whoever made it labeled it, "This is art." It's offensive, but intended as such. Just like the "protest" imagery I posted.

"this is art"

has the same feel as "in minecraft" when talking about killing people/illegal actions

Seems like pretty flimsy cover when it comes to an event where people actually died. I don't think this was even the only noose which was hung outside of the capitol building, either.
