Hacking Best Way to Upgrade Internal HDD on PS3 with CFW Rebug 4.81 installed?

I'm looking for a little help here on how best to upgrade my PS3's internal hdd. I recently used PS3eploit, and installed Rebug 4.81 on a 500GB internal hard drive. I'm using a 2TB external hdd for all my games (about 100 games atm). My 500GB internal hdd is getting full with all the data that these games install to the internal drive. I would like to upgrade the internal drive to 1TB. Here are my questions...

1. Given that PS3exploit was applied to this system, and the OS/CFW is rebug 4.81, how to I go about reinstalling the OS on the new 1TB drive once it's installed?
2. Is there any risk of bricking the system?
3. Do I just install the new hdd, then reinstall Rebug 4.81 from the Rebug 4.81 ps3update.pup?
4. Should I do a full backup of the 500GB internal drive first through system settings>backup utility?
5. If I can do what's mentioned in question #3, can I recover from the back up in question #4 with Rebug 4.81 installed?

Oh, and of course I would like to transfer all the game install/saves data that I have already accrued on the 500GB hdd to the new 1TB hdd. If only there was some way to do a simple 1:1 clone, but from what I have read, Sony uses a file structure that the PC, and cloning software can't work with.

I have done a fair amount of google searching on this subject, and most everything I find involves a PS3 that is on OFW. Just want to know what is the easiest way to update an internal hard drive with the latest PS3exploit, and Rebug 4.81 CFW installed.

Just make a backup and replace the harddrive like you would normally. You won't lose CFW.

I read some guides with what you are saying. But I also read a lot about how Rebug 4.81 doesn't do well with recovering data from backups? That Rebug itself often gets corrupted, or glitchy? Is this true?

Hmm, I didn't know about that. I backed up my saves to a flash drive and just reset everything when I got a new harddrive.

I highly recommend you to update to Rebug 4.82, so backup saves, backup any games internally installed, change the hdd to the new one and usb recover/install Rebug 4.82. Recover by hand, install the rebug toolbox and upgrade webman/mmCm to latest version.

Oh and be careful with the screws in the hdd bay. They are really tight and can be destroyed quite easily.

Sorry to hijack but I have a related question, if I just want to purely upgrade the HDD to a bigger one can I just swap out the stock one currently in it? Or will this also still require reinstalling CFW?

PS3 uses a propietary filesystem on HDD and the FW is inside it, so yes, it requires installing some kind of FW for the system to properly boot. The system has minimal functionality which allows you to prepare the new hdd to contain a FW and actually install a FW in there. Wether is OFW or CFW only depends of you if the system had CFW previously.

Swap the disc, follow instructions. If the system had CFW, put Rebug or Ferrox 4.82 on an usb and use that CFW to prepare the new HDD. If the system never had CFW, install 4.82 OFW via USB and if its an exploitable system, install Rebug or Ferrox 4.82 via exploit.

Yep. I replaced mine last week and the very last one stripped out. I had to take a dremel with a cutting disc to grind a slit out to remove it with a flathead screwdriver.

yeah, it's easy really, just:

1) normal backup,
2) remove old HDD
3) replace with new HDD
4) restore OS (CFW or OFW) from usb (PS3UPDAT.PUP)
5) restore HDD backup
6) Game!

im thinking of doing this aswell to my ps3,
um can I use my ps4's 500gb HDD on my ps3 if I swap that out for a 1TB HDD?

Is it just the slim models that need the firmware reinstalled? I have a 60GB model and after upgrading the hard drive I didn't have to do anything, plus all of my profiles and the rebug toolbox package was still on there somehow.

also if everything went okay do i have to do something after that to play online or i only have to install psn patch

There is only lite. I'm just gonna stick with Rebug 4.81 for now.

Is it truly as easy as:

2) make sure I have a USB drive formatted to fat32, and it has the proper .PUP for 4.86.1 on it in the right folder structure: (PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP)
3) and then reinstall Multiman etc..

Also, how is it bad? Is it just slow or prone to malfunction? I have a lot of PSN games that I can't access any longer after having been booted from the network due to them scanning my system and detecting the CFW. I wouldn't have any way to reinstall them without backing up what's already there.

He probably means the standard backup method from Sony......which is rather unsuitable for CFW users.
Rebug itself also has a backup function under the debug options, but this hardly ever works.

The best thing you can do is take a look at Berion's instructions on psxplace :

And if you're just a standard user who doesn't need DEX CFW or otherOS features etc. I would also advise you to switch to Evilnats CFW.
