Atari teases a brand new product

Fresh from a Facebook announcement post, veteran gaming brand Atari has teased "a brand new Atari product" that has been "years in the making." See the teaser for yourself:

Atari is asking those interested to subscribe now at www.ataribox.com and be the first to know more. Judging from the site's name, this product might very well be call the Atari Box. And as this name suggests, it might very well be a console!

What do you think will this new product actually be? What do you want it to be? And is there a place for a fourth competitor among gaming console hardware makers?

There's no way this console is going to be any kind of actual competition with current gen stuff, you can throw that hope out the window right now. Atari simply doesn't have the money to come even close for R&D costs alone, not to mention production, testing, and development. I will be 100% shocked if this console is anything even remotely close to a PS4/Xbone in terms of actual power, less so if it just beats out the Switch (cuz a potato could do that).

I do hope it's something neat though, I was always fascinated with the 2600 growing up so I don't want Atari to fuck this up and die on us cuz they bit off more than they could chew.

I suppose this will be a really pretty emulation machine, with true to the times controllers and an Atari themed case.
Most probably made to resemble the 2600, and emulating only this system. But perhaps it would emulate some other Atari system.
It can't be anything more complex or costly than that, it makes no sense in the current market.

It will be like the NES Classic edition but Atari. Its main buyers will be a lot of oldschoolers moved by nostalgia.

I curious to see how this new console's gonna be. My mind is telling it's gonna be a plug-in play but I hope not.

What would be kinda cool, generic Android hardware of course, but with BT for the Joystick, 4 USB ports with Atari releasing some add ons. Disk drives that would load actual ST software from 3.5 inch disks. Keyboards and mice, maybe some cart adapters for old Atari systems. Also Atari could have it's own ROM's market place to sell to people who don't want or know how to pirate. (Plus the official stuff could come with art and box scans and stuff) If the price of this was reasonable I could see a market for it, as long as they stay away from that Jag controller....

i really loved if this played atari jaguar games really , i wanted to play manny of them but the jags are expensive as hell and most of them dont work anymore, let alone the jaguar cd addon.

UPDATE: this email just came in. have a look.

As you can guess, those ports suggest modern internal specs. It also means that while we will be delivering classic gaming content, we will also be delivering current gaming content.
seems like Atari's hopping back into the console business. I can also see an Ethernet port on the back! owo

Well right now hardware is reasonably cheap and you can just buy a Android based box make you own case and controllers and just use your software. Atari has some good IP and with emulation they can do a virtual console and even release newer games for it.

If they can keep it affordable yet not complete ass spec wise, I can see it being profitable for them.

I may not buy it, but I like the idea of it.... I am in wait and see mode right now I guess lol

I want them to emulate the atari ST to be honest, hope it can be done with this.
Not sure if Atari could legally emulate the ST as I'm pretty sure Medusa Computer Systems bought the rights to the ST from Atari round about 1995 or 1996.
