Atari teases a brand new product

Capture.JPG

Fresh from a Facebook announcement post, veteran gaming brand Atari has teased "a brand new Atari product" that has been "years in the making." See the teaser for yourself:

Atari is asking those interested to subscribe now at www.ataribox.com and be the first to know more. Judging from the site's name, this product might very well be call the Atari Box. And as this name suggests, it might very well be a console!

What do you think will this new product actually be? What do you want it to be? And is there a place for a fourth competitor among gaming console hardware makers?

Its going to be like the NES Mini, they are just getting on the hype train. Maybe, we will see it support HDMI and Bluetooth controllers. I'm not going to bother since I own a Sixer, a decent collection of carts, and an older Sony CRT thats working well.

Atari has been working on virtual reality for a long time, but with free movements (not couch gaming, but more immersive environment in big area).
But it's already known, not "brand new", so it's either something else, or it's related but now soon to be released/announced publicly?

I grew up playing games like Zorro, Mr. Do, Decathlon and Beachhead on the Atari 800 XL.
If this box is a best of I hope we can add more games to it like the mini nes.

If you never played Atari just look at what you missed out on:

PS: Hell I played that game a lot, and died often, because I am bad. But I remember bouncing back at the Zombie Sumo guy's belly... weird game. (Also, I played that on C64, and I don't remember it so colorful, that screenshot might be from other platform)

Now it is more like I remember.

For the last couple of years Atari had minimal staff (according to Wikipedia it was 10 employees) and focused on making casino games - they don't have the budget for anything beyond a cheap, low quality hardware clone or emubox. Don't get your hopes up.

so next gen casinos? instead of stupid slot machines, you go into a casino and put a set of glasses

Nothing's emulated on it yet, It's all new releases

Plus it isn't running Android
Snk is emulating a ton on there. Also, nintendo didn't push their VC stuff yet to let devs have some breathing room. Devs have always been upset as it removes a lot of game sales due to cash flow of the gamers. (Some gamers will spend the money on old zelda titles and mario vc launch ahead of a third party game)

I asked for a press kit (I am in a media club at school and a future episode on this would be cool) and I got this in response:
