Are you independent?

By and large if you are buying school textbooks you are doing it wrong. Doubly so if you live in a country with one of the best library systems in the world.
Well, I live in a small town (less than 9000 residents), so our library isn't the best out there. And some books were used in all of the courses for that subject, so overall it was a lot easier to buy the books. And that way you had all the material to study for the matriculation examination. I did borrow some books from friends, and we shared books if we had the same courses.

tl;dr parents are out busy, dad can't drive me, my sister says this is the time to be independent.

What's there to do at the mall? If it were me, I'd just go to gamestop or whatever. What would you do if you had a day free? I know a lot of tempers are around my age, and some even older.
Do what you like.
Don't go to the mall "just because" you have a day free if you don't need/want to go there.
You want to go to gamestop? then go. but don't force yourself to go if you prefer staying home.

But don't act like it's something exceptional, that you are doing in their back. It's not like you are chained home, and just sneak out when they can't watch you.
You are free to go to the mall whenever you want, not only when your parents are not here.

If I had a day free, I would stay at home and watch video/play/code/browse forums ;)
Just do what you like.

I'm 35 and still at my parent's home. I have a job, a car, but no home (cause it's too expansive), but I don't go out when I don't work.
they tell me "go out, profit of the life !", but I am already profiting of my life by doing what I like. People think that profiting is "going outside, walking randomly without reason", for me it's doing what I like.

Of course, you could force yourself to go out, you are still young and probably still at school. Find some friends (boys or girls) to be with which share the same things you like or you'll end up alone.
Trust me, being alone later will be harder to find friends or a wife (if you want one), because everyone will already have their own life to manage full-time and they won't have time to spend with "making new encounter with a stranger" when they already have their own friends. (of course it will depend where you live/hang out)

This doesn't become a problem until you go to university, sometimes they demand the latest issue of the textbook depending on the course. Libraries don't always stock those and if they do it's usually in limited numbers.

Indeed :D Sure, you'd get more money if you had a job (my allowance was 150€/month this past year), but it was enough for the school books and other things I need, and even bought a brand new laptop ^w^
Ours might seem like too much :/ not that I have anything against it personally but... converted to euro/dollars it's €330/$420 a month. (2828kr)
I'm saving up for a car+license.

The fuck am I still doing here in Indiana? I don't have the money for a car, college, ect. Why am I not there?
People who skips school here just because without a real job or anything makes me sad, what a wasted opportunity. :(
I know it probably sounds weird but it's incredibly fair since everyone has an equal chance at getting education no matter what economical situation they're in.

Even then aside from maybe two or three (quite literally two or three) core textbooks I would hold you are probably still wasting your money (even pirating it is probably still wasting the trivial amount of bandwidth and space books take up). "latest editions" is almost always a scam as well.

Saying it's a problem is exaggerating it, it's only a textbook or two you have to end up buying, it's literally only when there's a significant revamp you have to get the latest one. Most of the time you can go to the library or find used ones.

In recent times has any university grade textbook (postgrad fields aside) ever got a significant revamp?

Edit- as I forgot to address it last time around. Finding new friends when you are older... I do not know if it is harder per se but it is different. Bonus is you can pick and choose a bit more where schools are usually just by age range which is a horrible predictor of how well you will get on with someone.

Yeah, I can take the bus. But the problem is what to do. I've never been "on my own" before. Without any friends, I don't see much to do

I have a very narrow opinion on life. Go school, go home, go on internet.

Get yourself some hobbies.

Go Swimming.

Start playing an instrument. Learn another language. Work out.

Eventually you will find something you like.

I tried to make friends by learning an instrument and went to conservatory for 5 years until I finally join an orchestra, after 4 years alone with the teacher.
Playing in an orchestra wasn't more easier to make friend as I still never talked to other people, we came, rehearsed, and left. no time to talk, just play.
I suppose it's also my fault not talking to unknown people, I'm kind of social phobic and I didn't even dare to talk to an old school mate (whom I never talked to back in school) which played in that orchestra too.

Finding adult friends is different (people could think you try to date them instead, or don't want to bother with someone else), and can be harder for some people.

If he can find few friends while he is young, while they have more free time and don't care about job/family/house yet, it will be easier for him.

Edit: to answer the topic's subject, I'm dependent to others for few things due to my phobia/extreme shyness. it's more an handicap than a dependency.
