It would be neat to be able to mess about with replays and stuff, like seeing what would happen if you timed an attack differently. Would a program like this even be possible?

No one is even concrened in that...

It would be super cool and I don't think it would be hard since there is no form of protection!

I'd be happy to pause and take pictures in replays.

Replays are replays. They are NOT videos. The game itself just replays what you saved, so no, not a chance. [IMG]

Yea when you save a replay it pretty much just a sequence of your moves that it memorizes only by brawl. You would probably have to get the game on your pc and figure out what type of code it uses for the replays and somehow create a video player that has brawl on in which is 4.00+gb so don't count on it.

Nah, you can't watch them. Replay files are like 20 KB each, lol.

On the other hand, you can convert snapshots to JPG images (quality is kinda crappy, though).

Sadly not. Replays are basically saved as instructions for Brawl engine to carry out. Imagine CPUs told to do exactly what happened in the match. They aren't video files. So the whole Brawl engine would have to be emulated to convert the replay, and that is just not feasible.
