According to Wikipedia...

Anime (????, Japanese pronunciation: [anime];English pronunciation: /?æn?me?/ )is the Japanese abbreviated pronunciation of "animation". The definition sometimes changes depending on the context.[1] In English-speaking countries, the term most commonly refers to Japanese animated cartoons.[2]

Now I like a few anime. I'm not obsessed with them by any means. I believe it's okay to enjoy while still recognizing that it's a CARTOON. No reason to get defensive about it. No point in living in denial.

Thoughts?

anime are from jap and cartoons are from the rest of the world, i think.

All Japanese cartoons are anime, not all anime is cartoons.

It refers to animation in general, based on what Wikipedia says (why would you listen to Wikipedia anyway?).

Call them what you want, doesn't do anything.

Also courtesy of ITV news, manga is anime comics.

Merriam-Webster said:
Definition of ANIMATED CARTOON: a motion picture that is made from a series of drawings, computer graphics, or photographs of inanimate objects (as puppets) and that simulates movement by slight progressive changes in each frame

sounds quite a bit like an anime, doesn't it? is it that much of a shock to think that anime = cartoon?

could you list an anime that isn't a cartoon?

Genreally western cartoons usually don't have any order, and each episode can stand on it's own. (At least from the cartoons I've seen) Most anime have some sort of order where you'd have to have watched the previous episode to understand what's going on.

If my name is Justerportesvlocasnitus you will call me John just because you dont feel like pronouncing my name?

Justerportesvlocasnitus = Justerportesvlocasnitus
John = John
Anime = Anime
Catoon = Cartoon

According to the Oxford English Dictionary.

cartoon/k???tu?n/
?noun

1 a drawing executed in an exaggerated style for humorous or satirical effect.

2 (also cartoon strip) a comic strip.

3 a film made using animation techniques to produce the appearance of movement.

4 a full-size drawing made as a preliminary design for a painting or other work of art.

Therefore as Anime is animation then strictly speaking all anime are cartoons

Well, to me Anime = Japaneses Cartoons
Cartoons = other Cartoons

Why does matter if it a cartoon or not anyway...

Enjoy the show.

anime = cartoon
"graphic novels" = comics

People like to use better sounding words to reference things that aren't popularly enjoyed past a certain age in Western society. Reading "graphic novels" sounds better than reading "comics". Likewise, watching "anime" sounds better than watching "cartoons".

It is what it is.

Just watch what you enjoy, regardless of what it's labelled. There's no point trying to defend whether it is or is not a cartoon. It's a gigantic waste of energy for something that doesn't matter one bit.

That is exactly my point. It doesn't matter. Yet some people take offense as if their mother's been insulted when anime are described as cartoons. It doesn't take away any legitimacy from the medium.

Exactly

Well it's just that "cartoon" has a satirical connotation while a number of the highest rated anime are dramatic. While it isn't entirely wrong to call an anime a cartoon, it is important to differentiate between the two as the Japanese tend to expand their animation to a number of genres while other countries' animations are typically joking and/or childish in nature. It's much like the words gay and homosexual; they are both acceptable in describing a homosexual, but using "gay" is less specific and could mean a number of other things.

but the thing is, it's only important to differentiate the two when speaking with a hardcore anime fan. i can see the difference between Japanese "anime" and western "cartoons" but at the same time, you're just telling me that anime = "serious cartoon". Being serious and released in installments does not change the fact that it's an animated production (cartoon).

Bro, not all Anime is "serious". It's like any other form of animation; for every Spongebob or Fairly Odd Parents there is a South Park or Happy Tree Friends. Some content is for older audiences, some is not. Some (BOBOBO) JUST DON'T GIVE NAW FUCKS

But point being, those "hardcore" Anime fans who can't accept they are watching a cartoon need to get trolled by me, ASAP. I have had this argument with people before, and it always ends hilariously. Seriously, people, accept the fact you masturbate to CARTOONS already!

OH RIGHT, PS: It doesn't matter if it is a cartoon or not. a Good show is a good show.

It just to make a difference where they come from. But does it really matter? I enjoy the cartoon Avatar more than many popular animes.

I always assumed anime = japanese cartoon.

It's just unlike 99% of Western cartoons, japanese "cartoons" typically follow a story, and some of those stories happened to absolutely fantastic.

It's not like calling anime a cartoon actually means anything, or belittles it in any way. If you called Clannad a cartoon, that really wouldn't change anything about how brainexplodingly fantastic it is.

Kind of unfair to say Cartoons aren't typically serious or have an overarching plot.
Remember all those 80's and early 90's cartoons?

Had stuff like Gargoyles and X-men.

And anime is typically serious?
There are all kinds of random nonsensical anime with no plot whatsoever.
And these days you have mindless fanservice for practically every new series that airs.

Totally serious.

Anime are just cartoons from Japan.
Calling them cartoons is just as correct, you're just not specifying origin.

And in the end it doesn't matter, just watch what you like.

Serious is not the right way to describe Anime as a whole. >_>

Dunno about you guys but I thought Mitsudomoe and Shinryaku! Ika Musume were dead serious at all times. Just like all anime.

I'm not saying they CAN'T be, I am just saying there are things like Bo-bo-bo-bo-bo-bo-bo-bo and Azumanga to prove that they are not ALWAYS serious.

If you were being sarcastic, sorry for not picking up on it. XP Wait, just read what animes you put. NEVERMIND you were kidding.
