Hacking Alternative firmwares for M3

Just putting that out there.. Almost all Class 2 SDHC Cards are really crappy.. there are exception's though. (I think the old Sandisk but I'm not too sure)

Class 4-6 should play things really well. regardless of storage

some cards 2 class are faster than 4 class

THIS is where the exception applies.
You can still test the Read/write speed and latency using some program (which name I can't remember for the time being)

Trancend 2Gb - Very slow at all but games boot much faster 5 sec...
Kingston 8Gb SDHC 4 class - Much faster than Trancend but some games boot for 1.5 min...

But... On old non SDHC cards some games have FPS fall... So SDHC much better for games...
I have speed fall on Pokemon Black/White and other 3D games if i use non SDHC...

Looks like for me we can not decide what is the best sd card for YSM3.
I can only say on my 8 gb Kingstone sdhc I don't have any problem with would but in YSM3 the games load very slowly. Sometimes for 3 minutes.

First I want to say great Job helping us M3 Users this way! Since I dont really want to buy a new card this helps alot.

Now I´m having a little problem with it. I tried playing Dragon Quest IX and it says its fragmented. Now I have seen what you have written in this thread and tried using the defrag program you recommended. It worked with Golden Sun after I tried it with that but somehow it wont defrag Dragon Quest. The defrag program just says theres not enough space to defrag the file which seems weird because there is over 1 gb of free space on that card. Any help would be appreciated.

From what I recall Normmatt once saying, you should never defrag stuff on a flash-based memory...because it is very very bad or something, though it is probably unrelated to this. Possibly just try backing it up and reformatting your microSD and then maybe use a fresh ROM.

Since I have also read the defrag is not good for the flash based device I don't recommend that. But if I remember right dragon quest IX is 256 mb and defrag it just move to pc and then the sd card don't help. So even if I don't recommend defrag your card this is the easiest way to "fix" it.
Anyway if it say there is not enough space then you have to get more space. Maybe if you don't have enough space on your card the program can not put that "parts" of the game in the same place of the sd card. Try to free up some place and see what you can do with it after.
Note: if you have the game on your card and you will still have about 256 mb free space maybe it doesn't mean it is good for you. I mean you have this place randomly on your card and can not defrag it.
If you can defrag your rom it must work

p.s.: I said I do not recommend to defrag your card, but sometimes this is the only solution. And my question is: why are there program which can defrag your sd card if it is not good? :/

Edit: I just read the reformatting idea and I have to agree with it. I mean if you format your card and put up the things maybe it will do it a more practically way and your free space is not randomly chosen, it is following each other... this way if it can copy allocating place which is follow each other, your rom won't be fragmented and it will work

For those who are having trouble with fragged roms that wont defrag try this it works for me EVERYTIME its easy and extremely simple.

1. copy the rom your having trouble with onto your comp (without deleting original)

2. rename the rom to something else like Pokemon Black rename it to Pokemon Black (u) or Translated basically anything else will work

3. copy back to Micro SD

4. once its finally copied back delete the original

5. Do the same for the save

Note: Do not change any extensions, anything before the .nds or .sav is fine.

I just have one note: if you don't have enough "defragmented" free space in your card (Sikila mentioned this problem above) it won't work because your computer do not have "defragmented" space. In this way formatting or deleting some other old not fragmented old rom will do the trick because then your computer will have enough defragmented free space where it put your roms.

With the saves it must work just moving it to pace and move back because they are small and your computer can easily place it to a non fragmented place.

Sorry, I am 100% rookie with this DS stuff.

I am using the Wood version on the first page for my M3i Zero, how do I use the cheat codes? When I go into the rpg folder there is nothing there. I tried downloading the all pack from the cheat database here and put all of them into the cheat folder and still nothing was there.

to both of you i use a 16 gig micro sd card, idk about u guys but i have never had a problem with this method im just posting my own results.

You only need to put the usrcheat.dat into the __rpg/cheats folder. Then on the Wood menu select a game press Y then X. If the game added to your database a menu will show up and you can select what you want to use. If you have done press X then A. Then you can boot your game and cheats will be enabled.

Note: use 1.20c or higher because in the 1.20 and 1.20b versions some of the cheats doesn't work. It was fixed in 1.20c
