Is there a way possibly by adding a string to the INI file to add a default ROM directory. I am setting up the DSi for my son who is FOUR. He is not going to figure out who to navigate to the ROM directory in NESDS and other emulators. In reading I saw mention of adding something to the INI file to be passed along to the emulator. Do the popular emulators support this?

I am using the DSTWO and am experimenting with emulators. Are you referring to it being done within the EMULATOR or are you saying there is a way to set this in the INI? Any more info you can provide?

Each emulator is separate and has nothing to do with one another. It's up to the emulator's developer to add a default ROM path into the emulator or even a configurable .ini for that matter. It has almost nothing to do with the DSTWO aside from the fact that the DSTWO also has emulators specific to it's hardware, but even then, refer to sentence 2.

In other words, if the emulator has a .ini file, then you should check the default .ini (NesDS generates a .ini file I think...and then you can edit it). If it doesn't have one, then there might not be the option for it, though I recall some emulators that have hardcoded default paths that can't be changed, but you shouldn't need to move around in directories anyways.

I created the INI for NESDS, lets use this one as an example. I can not find any documentation on the NESDS that would explain the command and format in which I need to use to set a default DIR. In reviewing the APP, I don't see it in there either. I never thought for a second all the emulators were developed by the same person or company. Not have any success using the SEARCH on this site either.

NOPE that must be what DIR the file is loaded out of. If anyone else has any insight it would be greatly appreciated. I dug through the Jensis emulator as well and couldn't find anything. I guess I am asking TOO much here. :)

Depending on the kind of games you want to write to a microSD for your son, consider the following:

Nintendo DS via DS_GAME: Displays files from the directory containing the last selected DS game, so you can sort of restrict to a single directory yourself first. 9 files on a page, after which he will have to scroll.
Game Boy (and Color) via Lameboy or GameYob: Displays files from /LAMEBOY on the card by default, configurable in an .ini generated after exiting the emulator for the first time. ~15 files on a page, after which he will have to scroll.
Game By Advance via TempGBA: Displays files from /TEMPGBA/GAMES on the card when New Game is touched, non-configurable. 7 files on a page, after which he will have to scroll.
Super Nintendo via CATSFC: Displays files from /CATSFC/GAMEPAK on the card when New Game is touched, non-configurable. 7 files on a page, after which he will have to scroll.
(nesDS: see above)

If you have more games than these page sizes, your son will have to know how to scroll. Most of the time you can just keep pressing the Down direction though. One entry in most file choosers is the parent directory, "..", and I removed this entry from my counts above. DS_GAME, nesDS, TempGBA and CATSFC also support touching the desired file, but not Lameboy or GameYob.

Good luck, and have retro fun!

@SylverReZ, I also heard one of the Prince of Persia games was so unfinished that it required the "24/7 online" drm so a puzzle could be done and the game could be finished. And that when the Ubisoft servers were closed the (cracked) game was impossible to finish or something like that
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, That's extra scummy. Ubisoft nowadays ship out incomplete games like Skull and Bones which was being worked on for nearly a decade now.

I like that games can be fixed after the fact, hate that it's being abused via beta tests... And DLC... I was a 7800 owner back in the day and loved Impossible Mission, turns out I couldn't beat it because it was actually impossible lol

I never knew about it at the time but a fixed version was available but you had to mail in your broken copy lol

So that version is semi rare
