What does really happen when you "sacrifice" an ally using the plume?

Aside from

you can't get the best ending

Does it affect the enemies or anything?

and oh... Does Ancel(?) really have to die?

Ancel does not have to die. You can opt out of testing the Plume.
As for using it, depending on how many times you use it depends on what story path you take.
It also determines who you get in your party xD
Also, I guess it'll effect how many combo's and siege's you learn.

-This shows all the possible story paths that can be taken based on how many times you use the plume per chapter. Thus, it is spoilers, and I advise you click the link at your own discretion.

As for effecting the enemies, all it does to them is pummel them tothe ground by whoever is using the Plume.

Are you sure? I tried every option I could to not use it, but the only thing it would let me do was sacrifice him.

Yeah, how do you do this? The third battle *which is just Wyl & Ancel* there is no other option usable aside from sacrificing him.

Yes, Ancel have to die, it's part of the game.
My apologies for giving false hope. i'd read else where that it was possible, but upon testing it myself, you guys are right, we cannot opt out of killing Ancel.

some battles are trully impossible without making sacreficces its verry hard

I KNOW!!
Especially when the realmstalkers are in the stage-_-
God dammit, i got so pissed i just use the plume when they appear.
That archer girl you get early in the game has a good plume skill, paralyze all non-boss monsters for 3 turns!

Aren't those the enemies that appear when you don't gain sufficient sin?

If you set your attacks and Soul Crushes right, it's extremely easy to get 100 sin per kill.

I've read somewhere- I think IGN- that if you don't get enough sin, the next "boss" battle will have realm stalkers.

I haven't seen them yet, but I've heard that they pretty much require you to plume somebody in order to beat them.

Also, keep in mind the rewards you get at the end of battle change depending on how much over the sin target you get.

100% of target:
a few OK items.
150% of target: some fairly good items.
200% of target: lots of awesome items.

oh really? but I read somewhere- here I go again- that the ending will be different if you at least sacrifice someone *aside from Ancel*
